Top Palestinian negotiator rips into ‘discredited, useless’ Abbas

A leaked audio recording of chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat harshly criticizing PA President Mahmoud Abbas over his reluctance to pursue Israel in the international arena exposed severe fissures within the Palestinian leadership regarding how best to engage Israel following the collapse of US-brokered negotiations in April, and showed profound disdain by Erekat for his president.

In the video, Erekat says Abbas has lost his credibility, slams his “useless” approach, and compares him to Saddam Hussein and Bashar Assad. The top Palestinian negotiator also says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal who isn’t “worth the bullet” to shoot him.

The source and time of Erekat’s speech were not reported, but in the edited three-minute recording, uploaded to YouTube late Wednesday night by the Awraq News Agency, the Palestinian official accused his president of acting autocratically against the will of a majority of the Palestinian leadership, which voted for a harsher stance against Israel.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said Thursday the recording was spliced together from different comments, with words taken out of context, and that he is the target of a smear campaign.

The recording was posted on a Palestinian website Wednesday. It lasts three-and-a-half minutes, with a beep or jump at four points, suggesting some cuts.

In the audio, Erekat is heard saying that Abbas should get tougher with Israel, including by trying to brand Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a war criminal over Israel's settlement construction on war-won lands. It's not clear if the comments were made before the last round of Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations broke down in April.

over not joining more UN agencies but Maan had this piece today

A Palestinian ministerial committee tasked to examine how to join international conventions is scheduled to convene by the end of June in Ramallah to study submitting letters of accession to more multilateral international treaties.

Palestinian diplomats told Ma’an on Wednesday that the committee would meet June 25-27 to review more letters of accession. The committee is headed by Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki. Senior PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat and Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour are members of the committee.

According to the sources, the Palestinian leadership intends to join some 500 more international conventions and organizations.

“Every day new international treaties emerge, such as the Arms Trade Treaty, and all Palestine needs to join them is a letter of accession signed by President (Mahmoud) Abbas to the UN Secretary General,” a diplomat told Ma’an.

some on other vital issues. What happened to break that apart, I don't know..I am lousy at
trusting any of the actors involved, but Abbas' last move did shock me.

I hope going forward they both shock their people, in a good way.
