PA official: Unity pact is void if Hamas carried out kidnapping

If it is proved that Hamas was behind Thursday’s kidnapping of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank, the Palestinian Authority will reevaluate its unity pact with Hamas, a senior official in the Palestinian Authority told The Times of Israel on Monday.

The official said that the kidnapping would mark a breach of the understandings between Fatah and Hamas, and would render their unity agreement null and void.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also said that the assessment in Palestinian intelligence is that Hamas, or a faction within Hamas, was responsible for the kidnappings Thursday night of Eyal Yifrach, Gil-ad Shaar and Naftali Frankel.

Something is up...we'll have to see how it truly fits with responsibility.

In the mean time, they all should be focusing on the kids, not the politics.

Firstly, a delegation from the West Bank is in Egypt with the aim of persuading the new leader in Cairo to open the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Sinai. Secondly, the new Palestinian unity government has been discussing an issue of great concern to the rulers of Gaza, namely, the payment of wages to thousands of Hamas officials.

The Palestinian delegation in Egypt on Tuesday is headed by Azzam Al-Ahmad, who holds the reconciliation portfolio within Fatah. The delegation, which includes members of the PLO leadership, went to discuss the opening of the Rafah crossing that connects the Sinai Peninsula and Gaza Strip, thereby opening a valve that will allow Gaza residents some freedom of movement.

At the same time, Mofid al-Hasayneh, a minister in the Palestinian unity government, announced that a meeting had been held in Ramallah to discuss the issue of salaries of 40,000 officials who had been working under the Hamas government in Gaza. He said that the government is developing a system to pay these salaries before the beginning of Ramadan in two weeks.

"As soon as the mechanism is ready, we will announce the date for payment of salaries," he said, adding that in order to highlight unity, the new government wanted to hold a special meeting in Gaza, but that Israel was preventing it from taking place.

Interesting indeed we've gone from Abbas being held solely responsible to Kerry/US being partially responsible to this could it be the divide and conquer game ?

that the US/Kerry should take responsibility..but I am curious about those unnamed
sources within the PA who are throwing Hamas under the bus.

Abbas needs them for the time being and Hamas has no alternatives
but to go along and wait for any fall out from a possible bad deal Abbas will make with
Israel. I will be surprised if Hamas is behind this because it just does not serve them
at this point..they have been very careful to not make waves with Egypt too.

and it could well be that a Palestinian splinter group are the perpetrators but for the moment it seems that Israel has the positive or at least sympathetic spotlight, almost anything Israel does is viewed as understandable, the news about the 2 Palestinian teenagers killed on Nakba Day is gone, news about any Palestinian killed in the past few days is also gone, there are obvious attempts to break the unity government and Area A (the 18% under complete Palestinian control) of the West Bank is undergoing systematic village to village raids albeit the kidnapping happened in Area C which is under complete Israeli control also if you read Israeli papers there is an uptick in 'pricetag' attacks against IDF by settlers which seems weird given the timing

For the most part Palestinian children have no value, that has been clear for a long time. I give credit to those within
Israel who do acknowledge them and their great work to expose the human rights abuses that occur each day.
