US prevents UN condemnation of Israel over West Bank deaths

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The UN Security Council failed to agree on a statement that would have deplored the deaths of Palestinians in Israeli operations following the abduction of three Israeli teenagers.

Diplomats said Jordan insisted that “deploring” wasn’t strong enough and US Ambassador Samantha Power said any language directly criticizing Israel would be “a red line” for the Americans. The diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity because the consultations were closed.

Since the youths disappeared from a hitchhiking stop in the southern West Bank on June 12, Israel has rounded up hundreds of Palestinians in a bid to find them, while also crushing the West Bank network of Islamist movement Hamas, which it accuses of abducting the teens.

Troops have also killed four Palestinians in raids in the past week, and on Monday the United Nations called the deaths in the security sweep “alarming.”

...in the civilized world that took issue with the UN's vile, antisemitic rapporteur for the Palestinian territories, Richard Falk. Falk served his full term for the UN despite many justified calls to have him removed.

In fact, the USA is one of the only countries that has a problem with countries like Syria being elected to serve on the UN's human rights commission in 2011 - well into the period when Syria started its recent atrocities. Just a few months ago, Syria was re-elected as Rapporteur of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization. The UN Human Rights Council also just adopted a resolution about Syrian Human Rights in the Golan that was drafted by Syria itself.

The UN has zero credibility when it comes to lecturing western democracies about human rights.

In February 2014, Syria was unanimously elected again as Rapporteur of the UN special committee on decolonization.

In March 2014, the UNHRC adopted a resolution about Human Rights in the Golan, drafted by Syria itself.

In April 2014, Iran was elected to a 4 year term to a commission on the status of women.

About the same time, "the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York today elected Iran to a four-year term on its 45-nation Commission on the Status of Women, the principal intergovernmental body dedicated to protecting women's rights."

Try and look at it this way, possibly...policing the world is not a simple task, encouraging
and promoting human rights can be complicated...this is just one institution. So it is
not about whether or not I have a problem with the way they govern themselves.

Some human rights problems can't be fixed in a simple manner...some can't be fixed at all.

The representatives of Syria, Iran, Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, Russia, China, Cuba, and of course Palestine, stood up to accuse Israel of every possible – and impossible – crime against the rights of the Arabs in general and the Palestinian people in particular....

The intention to demolish the family home of the two Palestinians charged with the killing of Baruch Mizrahi means adopting an official policy of harming the innocent, stated Israeli human rights NGO B'Tselem. The two suspects will be tried for the attack, and are expected to be sentenced to long periods of detention. Their family members, who are not suspected of any offence, are the ones who will suffer the loss of their home: 13 people are currently living in the house, including 8 children.
