Blue Jays Suspend Shortstop 3 Games for Gay Slur Written on Eyeblack

The Toronto Blue Jays suspended shortstop Yunel Escobar on Tuesday for three games for wearing eyeblack tape during Saturday’s game on which he had written a gay slur in Spanish.

Photographs of Escobar during the game circulated Monday on the Internet, prompting swift action from the Blue Jays, who consulted with Major League Baseball, Commissioner Bud Selig and members of the Players Association.

Escobar is also required to attend sensitivity training, the Blue Jays said, and he will participate in educational outreach to promote tolerance based on sexual orientation. The money that Escobar will lose to the three-day suspension, roughly $83,000, will be directed to the You Can Play project, which works to ensure athletes are treated the same regardless of sexual orientation, and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

The Blue Jays also held a team meeting Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, according to Manager John Farrell, to inform the players of Escobar’s punishment, warning them to be more careful and respectful.
