http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/01/insurgent-st-patricks-day-parade-comes-into-its-own/Brendan Fay pointed to an e-mail on his computer screen from the New York Fire Departments Emerald Society Pipes and Drums corps confirming that it would be marching in the St. Patricks Day parade in Queens, on Sunday.
Now thats how you know the tide has turned for us, said Mr. Fay, 54, adding that this would be quite a change from the lone bagpiper that the fledgling parade had most years.

Having grown up there, I salute Queens for coming of age. I remember marching in a Gay Irish contingent some years back when they had it in Jackson Heights. Woodside is probably more Irish than J hts, anyway. Too bad I will miss it

- several irish pubs but also a little Manila and a Thai restaurant that foodies flock to all the way from (gasp!) Manhattan. Jackson Heights still has Gay Pride in early June and JH as well as Woodside now have openly gay City Council Reps.
