A litany of 'thou shalt nots': Catholic teachers challenge morality clause
By Susan Candiotti and Chris Welch, CNN
updated 11:10 AM EDT, Sat May 31, 2014

(CNN) -- If you want to teach at a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, regardless of your religion, you must be willing to sign a detailed morality clause that critics say focuses on "pelvic issues."

The revised contracts forbid teachers from -- among other things -- living together or having sex outside of marriage, using in-vitro fertilization, a gay "lifestyle," or publicly supporting any of those things...

..."It is an embarrassment and a scandal, and will drive even more Catholics away from an institution so out of touch with its times," said Robert Hague, a high school English teacher for 50 years...

...First, the 2014-15 contract adds the title "ministers" to all teachers -- from geography to gym class -- a move seen as a legal maneuver to try to protect the archdiocese from discrimination lawsuits. It stems from a 2012 U.S. Supreme Court decision in the case of Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. EEOC, in which the justices cite a "ministerial exemption" that gives religious institutions greater latitude when hiring and firing employees.... MORE

1. I'm glad they're pursuing a course that will lead to irrelevancy

I keep trying to steer believers over to the Anglicans, essentially the same church but independent of the stupidity and corruption that is Rome.

2. Unfortunately the Anglican Church also has some serious issues

And again, it's over the issue of GLBTs, which is creating a schism. The Anglicans have also been implicated in anti-gay terrorism in places like Uganda, where they backed recent and barbaric anti-gay legislation.

5. It seems "the gays" are causing a lot of denominational schisms

The Anglicans, the United Methodists, the "Scottish Church" (which I assume means the Presbyterians), on and on. Jeezil, there's some powerful hatin' going on out there. But as far as Christian churches go, as a lesbian I most fear the Catholic church for none of the denominations I mentioned has anywhere near the money or lobbying power they do to be used against the rights of women and LGBTs.

Gay pride event has focus on Catholic teacher contract
By Michael D. Clark
May 31, 2014

As the annual Pride Parade winds its way through downtown Cincinnati, its backdrop is the storm of controversy generated by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati's new teacher contract and its so-called morality clauses.

Officials from the national Human Rights Campaign amped up the national controversy this week. The Washington, D.C.-based gay rights organization put another spotlight on Cincinnati – and other dioceses around the country – by sending a letter to the Vatican on behalf of nine teachers who quit their jobs by refusing to sign the new contract.

Cincinnati archdiocese officials sharply countered that the group – along with other opposition organizations – is mischaracterizing the new contract's provisions.

HRC officials said "the Archdiocese of Cincinnati took anti-LGBT to a new level, calling not only for the firing of gay and lesbian school employees, but also citing support of the 'homosexual lifestyle' as grounds for dismissal." .... MORE at link posted above.

6. Here's the deep background: Not enough nuns.

It used to be that Catholic schools were taught by nuns (with the occasional priest for religion classes). No issue of employment contracts.

The move to hiring on the open market is a result of the lack of new nuns.

Having managed to make the vocation of being a nun as thankless as possible, the Catholic Church has now moved on making teaching at a Catholic school a thankless task for lay people, too.

All good in my book. They can't wither away too soon for me.

8. If their title is minister, and their exemption is based on the religious role..

Then I say fine, let them have that. Their teachers are ministers, and they are protected under the first amendment..

They also get no right to accreditation as an educational institution, and any students who graduate from their school get no recognized educational diploma. They have sermons, not classes. They should get no educational recognition, no educational funding/assistance, and no student who graduates from their church may use any document received from such as proof of education.
