House Committee Invites Witness To Go On Anti-Gay Rant, Because Religious Freedom

WASHINGTON -- A House subcommittee held a Tuesday hearing on religious freedom and, among other witnesses, Liberty University dean and professor of law Mathew Staver was there to explain why it's not fair that mental health professionals are barred in some states from trying to convert gay people into straight people.

In his testimony before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice, Staver called it "religious discrimination" that two states, California and New Jersey, have passed laws prohibiting counselors from practicing gay conversion therapy on minors, a widely discredited approach to trying to change someone's sexual orientation. New York is also mulling a similar ban.

"Homosexual activists have attempted to enact laws throughout the country that would silence mental health professionals from expressing the truth that an individual can successfully reduce or eliminate unwanted same-sex attractions, behaviors or identity and live consistent with their sincerely held religious beliefs concerning human sexuality," Staver wrote in his prepared remarks. "Those efforts are nothing more than an attempt to censor any viewpoint concerning scriptural teaching on human sexuality, and they represent one of the greatest assaults on children and families that has arisen in recent times." ...

...Staver is no stranger to controversy. Earlier this year, he called Michelle Obama "an evil human being" and compared her to Adolf Hitler. In February, he said President Barack Obama should be impeached because governors and attorneys general were refusing to defend their states' constitutional bans on gay marriage.... Shocking, anti-gay vitriol comes to Capitol Hill
SDGLN Staff
June 11th, 2014

WASHINGTON – A notorious homophobe, known for his outlandish comments about the LGBT community, has been allowed to submit prepared testimony at a congressional hearing on "The State of Religious Liberty in the United States."

"Religious liberty" is a trendy new code phrase from the Religious Right to pretend that their religious rights are under attack, when in fact their bigotry and discrimination are being called out and they don't like being exposed for their hatred and bias.

Mathew Staver -- whose anti-gay rhetoric and hate speech is monitored by Right Wing Watch, GLAAD and the Southern Poverty Law Center -- was given a platform by U.S. Rep. Trent Franks (R-Arizona), a Southern Baptist who is ranked as one of the most conservative Republicans in Congress...

...Particularly disturbing was Staver’s defense of so-called “reparative therapy,” a medically-baseless practice by which junk scientists attempt to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of LGBT people — sometimes with disastrous results. Several states, including California and New Jersey, have recently banned these harmful practices, particularly from being administered to children. In his testimony, Staver called these bans a form of religious discrimination.

As much as it hurts Staver, everyone gets the same rights, whether they are in his church or not.

I have a nasty (?) penchant for thinking out of the box. If religions want to own their hatred og homosexuality, how can we turn it against them?

If "Congress shall make no law" we need to make sure everything the religious bigots want is thoroughly enshrined as one of their establishments.
