Dentured servitude...

Back in March I entered the world of dentures. Much as I enjoy the prospect of enjoying foods I've had to avoid for decades, I'm having a heck of a time with adhesives. I have to "re-goop" three or four times a day, and I'm not always someplace where that's possible; not to mention the embarrassment of having my teeth drop in the middle of a conversation.

Anyone here have any recommendations?

those 'sea bond' pad things yet? I constantly see those being advertised around here for people who don't like the 'goop'.

A couple of friends have tried that, were not happy with it. And, of course, the goop that works for them does not work for me.

with a denturist instead of a dentist, here is how it went for me:

1. got the denture
2. a month later he put in a temporary liner
3. after about 6 months I had the reline redone because it was loose
4. at 11 months, the reline was replaced with a permanent reline.

You gums are still shrinking over a year so this is why the liner is redone. A regular dentist does not usually have a schedule like this but they should.

There have been a couple of adjustments, the reline is scheduled for September. I should mention that this whole procedure is via a program of donated services (for which I am extraordinarily grateful!), so there are limitations on how much work is done. The oral surgeon explained the benefits of the "pegs" and I understood the mechanics; but that is way too expensive to be covered by the program. Thus, my search for goop continues.

Again, my thanks.

I don't have dentures. However, my mother did. She got them in the late 1950's and they lasted the rest of her life, until 1999. She never used any adhesive, because they were fitted to fit without them. I do recall that she went back any number of times to make sure they were fitting properly.

And they never slipped, either. Never. Nor did she have that weird sound that many people wearing dentures make when they talk, which I think is the sound of a slight shifting of the dentures.

So every time I see adds for the goop, I wonder why in the world the dentures aren't fitted so as not to need the stuff in the first place?

meaning the dentures need to be relined frequently in order to maintain a good fit.

My dad had all his teeth pulled when he was 26, the Depression followed by WWII having done a number on the lousy teeth he inherited and passed on to me. He was delighted when Crazy Glue came out because that meant he could repair them at home if he dropped them in the sink while he was cleaning them.

The main reason for using the goop with well fit dentures is so we can eat things with seeds on them. Nothing is worse than getting a few poppy seeds between denture and gum.

over a period of years to begin with, then it was several years before she was able to get dentures. This was the 1950's and there was almost no extra money for such a luxury. Now that I think about it, that may account for some of the working she did around that time. She was an RN, and while she did not work full time during the years she was having kids (six altogether), looking back and knowing about some of the part time or occasional nursing she did then, it may well have been specifically to pay for the dentures.

I can tell you that afterwards, and never using any good, Mom could eat anything, including corn on the cob.

worked for partial plates. I've also found that some adhesives work a lot better than others. Excellent fitting is probably the best bet of all.

My advice is to try every adhesive out there until you find one that works the best for you. Also keep a food diary to find out which foods tend to break down the adhesive the fastest, like hot coffee and hot tea. During the working day, maybe your caffeine will need to be cold and with bubbles or even in pill form.

Even with having to duck into the bathroom after lunch to reglue the bastards, they're a lot better than having a mouthful of painful, crumbling teeth that could shatter at any time.
