Well, my old food processor, which I bought at a yard sale for 5 bucks about 25 years ago, finally died today. I need another.
I used it to finely chop cabbage for cole slaw, mostly. I'd like the new one to be able to do that, and also chop vegetables; slice beets and sweet potatoes thinly for chips; and to finely process food for, say, a chicken salad.
Any recommendations? Thanks for your help!

(29,098 posts)Get a Cuisanart. Mine is years old and still does a bang up job for fine chopping, doughs and pretty much everything I need it to do. I use it almost every day now that my arthritis has made knife work too annoying.
For thin slicing though I find a Mandolin to be a far better tool for making potato chips and even slicing cabbage for slaw.

(36,827 posts)I use it quite often for all sorts of things. I've owned it for about 4-5 years and it still works like a charm.
This is the one I have.

(111,253 posts)get a Cuisinart. You can find them on Ebay and occasionally at places like Overstock, especially when they're making changes and bringing out a new model.
I understand Kitchen Aid makes a good one, but the difference between a Cuisinart and any other brand I've tried (afforded) has been astonishing.

(67,792 posts). . . . the key is to have the right blade. I do not believe a blade that slices chip thin is standard on any manufacturer's product so be sure to check what is available for your specific machine before you make the purchase. Note that in multimodel manufacturers not all blades fit all machines. If chips are irritant to you, then that becomes a selection driver. Make sure the machine you select can, indeed, do everything you want it to do.
On edit, I think, after you search, you'll choose Cuisinart. It really is the best choice. We have a mini and the next to top of the line of the smaller series ( can't recall right now as we are traveling and can't check. )

(12,051 posts)tentatively decided on a Cuisinart, but was also looking at Kitchenaid. I have a mandolin, so thin slicing may not be needed from the food processor - the mandolin does work well.
I'm headed out to the mall tomorrow.

(9,791 posts)It's about ten years old and it still works very well. It has two shredder blades one of which also slices and a standard chopper. I never use the mini bowl because I have a small Black & Decker that I use for nuts and fine chopped onions. I chose the one I have because it was more affordable for me than the Cuisinart at that time.

(12,051 posts)food processor for a small job would irritate the heck out of me. I will look at the B&D choppers too. Thanks for reminding me that I want to do that.

(9,791 posts)We got my daughter a 4 cup Cuisinart chopper for Christmas a few years ago. She uses it all the time. It's perfect for someone who lives alone and for a 2 person family as well.

(29,098 posts)I got mine about a year ago for 19.99. But you know how Costco is...what's there one day is gone the next.

(1,328 posts)put out by Giada from the food network. It has a couple of shredding blades and two slicing blades, one for very think slices.
Works very well and much cheaper than the cuisinart that I would love to have.
Had an old one from GE for about 30 years, finally died and was really sad to see it go. Had many different blades to chose from and I loved it.
If I had used my head I should have had someone look at it to see if the motor could have been fixed. Didn't realize it would be so hard to find on I liked as well.
