will gravy save me?

major OOPS!

Got a turkey out of the freezer a couple of days ago with brilliant plans to cook it at night so as to have the heat out of the house before the day got hot. It was pretty big, 20 lbs and I entertained the idea of cutting it up and cooking half in my big crock pot and the other half in the big toaster oven out on the porch but that was too much trouble. So I put it in the oven at 10-10:30 last night and set my alarm clock for 2:30.

Got up at 2:30 and checked temps...it needed another half hour or so so I set my phone timer for 45 minutes. When that went off, I again checked temps and it seemed done so (I swear) I shut the oven off and figured it would be safe from pets and could cool off in there until somebody got up.

Then I went back to sleep. Until 7.

The oven was still on. Meat was almost 200 degrees.

At least the dark meat will be done, and the color is FABULOUS.

Turkey in a chicken type salad with lots of mayo if the meat is dry.

would save any disaster. I would take the dry pieces and make some nice pot pies with loads of gravy. I have a recipe for a lemon pastry crust (it does not take like lemon) that is perfect PERFECT for pot pies. I am sure it is not unusual except for people who do not cook with a sense of adventure or enjoyment like me.

I bet you could. I have not had a toaster oven for a long time. One of my sons has one and loves to use it for much more than what we used to have them for. Good luck. We love pot pies, so many ways to make them.

I could bathe in turkey gravy, any kind of gravy really. Just drown it in gravy, it'll taste great.

deboned and cut up all the meat and most of it was fine! white is dry to be sure, but honestly I have had worse! (Grandma REALLY believed in cooking things well done) there were a few crunchy edges on the wings and "knees" but the dogs and I just snacked on them for breakfast. carcass is on to simmer for broth (gravy, soup).

and the pan drippings! OMG! the gravy is going to be magnificent. way too big of a hot dinner for this time of year, but...mashed potatoes and gravy! can't resist that. I don't like stuffing so if the house wants it there is some stovetop available and at least one bag of cranberries in the freezer too. they were supposed to be for smoothies, but have we used them in the past 8 months? nope. so thanksgiving dinner (almost) it is, though the meat will have to be reheated in microwave (or gravy ).

Thin slices warmed in a steamer for hot turkey sandwiches for later.

Steamers can overcome a lot of culinary sins in addition to freshening stale dinner rolls.

Nest time you want turkey in summer, butcher that thing down. It's the only way and you get to sleep all night.

it didn't really slice too well but I have a good pile of meat. I had originally planned to cut it up, but by the time it got to start that it was already too hot and I just didn't want to wrestle with it.

I want to get a barrel smoker and try that.

also I had already learned my lesson about big turkeys but this was one of those on sale been in the freezer way too long things.

oven on 225. I pour melted butter over top. Ummm the smell in house about 4am. And the giblets breakfast after they baked for 12 hours. Dogs love me too on those mornings. Edit to add. I don't buy turkeys. I buy what Mrs calls,Small Volkswagens... bigger us better!
