Cat with irritable bowel syndrome

so my youngest cat has IBS and we are looking for some suggestions on what to feed her.

Any sort of wet food seems to be giving her diarrhea (at least the ones that are available at pet stores (wellness etc.). However, i cant just give him dry food, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Anything that has worked with your sensitive tummy cats?

He came up with the IBD at three years old and is now 11 years old.

He would still get episodes of the throwing up, but for the most part, the "single protein" diet worked for him. For the episodes, we gave him "Cerenia" in pill form as needed for the throwing up, and occasionally, we had to give him shots of Cerenia.

He has now not had an episode of IBD in the last year. A couple of times he has refused to eat, which my vet concurs is a sign of nausea. When that happens, I give him Cerenia.

Very small meals, often, alternating dry kibbles with moistened kibbles, for a few days, maybe even a couple of weeks.

Give her system a chance to recover, let the inflammation subside.

Then you can start experimenting with other wet food options.

helpfully,

Below I linked to one type.

Our beagle developed really bad food allergies, he is now on the royal canine hypo-allergenic food and it worked great.

Eta the food we give him is by prescription, the type we use comes in dry, wet and treats.

I have no personal experience with this with my cat. She swears that the canned pumpkin helped her cat's "angry bowel syndrome". She's in the boonies and her cats aren't 100% indoor, so I'm not sure what the regular food is and what % of their diet purchased food is vs. what they catch.

I have had cats for most of my life, and all of them have had only dry food, except maybe a special treat of canned food once a week. My current kitty refuses to eat wet food, so that is no longer a weekly event.

Make sure that it is IBS and not something else (parasites, infection, etc.). I have had good luck with feeding little dabs of yogurt daily for several days. My vet said that probably was not a good idea, in case he was allergy to dairy products, but it worked for diarrhea that had no cause that the vet could find and had gone on for months after I adopted him....and we went through just about everything, including antibiotics, steroids, 3 different special diets. I think that they sell pro-biotics, which would not involve dairy, but I have never tried them.

My Sammy had problems for so long that his anal glands are all screwed up and won't empty on naturally. You might want to stop using the yogurt, since it is possible that there is a dairy allergy. It was frustrating trying to find a solution. I hope that you can find something that helps.

He's been on it almost a month with the dosage waning approximately every two weeks. It seems to be helping.

and we tried to feed her a homemade diet that was prescribed by the Vet, but she was having none of it. I asked the Vet for a good alternative, and he suggested a brand called Petguard. Petguard can only be found in health food stores. You can go to their website (Petguard.com) to find locations that sell that brand. It really worked for Cleo and we managed her on that food for four years until she passed away from a stroke.

My boy Jennings was just diagnosed with IBD, and I am trying to find a diet that works for him, so I have been reading old posts about it. He has not liked any of the prescription diets enough so far, so I think I will next try one of the venison or duck diets since he has never had those.

He is on prednisone now, and seems to have stabilized a bit. His stools are still loose, but not as bad, and he is at least eating enough to stop losing weight now. I have also ordered FortiFlora which should arrive tomorrow.

I thought I had a winner with home cooked food with U-stew supplements, but he bored of it after a week and wouldn't touch it again.

I hope your kitty is doing well. <3

I am making a list of recommendations, and will work through them until I find something he will like and his body will tolerate. It has been a trying time for us both. I worry every time he turns his nose up at a meal.
