Dog's dead owner requests dog be euthanized for joint burial

I think this is just wrong. If anything, the woman should be cremated or kept on ice until the dog passes naturally, and then they can be re-cremated/buried together.

DEARBORN COUNTY – An Indiana woman wanted her dog buried with her after she died—and it's even in her will. Connie Lay passed away on Nov. 25, but the dog—a German Shepherd named Bella—remains alive. Lay wanted the dog's ashes put with her own. The dog is currently being cared for at PAWS of Dearborn County Humane Society in Lawrenceburg.

Lay's lawyer said Bella is in the hands of Lay's friends. They also have the option to send her to an animal shelter in Utah if they can raise enough money. The dog's supporters have taken to using #SaveBella on Twitter in hopes of finding her a home.

For now, Bella's fate remains unclear.

since my dog has brought me so much happiness, I would want him to share that love with someone else (if my husband and kids passed, too.)

and she has every right to be allowed to live her life until she passes naturally. To end her life like this is just plain wrong and her owner should have realized that. I love my dog but if i die I hope she gets a nice new home and have done all I can to make sure that it happens.

What's a few years waiting compared to eternity?

Her beloved dog was buried alongside her years later.

The woman's will was either to get Bella to Best Friends, or euthanize her. The reason was because Bella had a history of aggression and her person was worried about what would become of her. She had been willing to arrange her life around Bella's temperament, but didn't want her to fall into the wrong situation.

The executor for her will didn't have the money to transport Bella to Best Friends.

Once Best Friends knew of the situation and volunteer transporation was found, the problem resolved. Bella either is already there, or en route.

10. From Best Friends 1/27/15 update

Jan 2015

On Sunday morning Bela’s caregiver noticed that his abdomen was distended and he was breathing rapidly, so he was brought to the Best Friends clinic for an emergency checkup...Tests revealed fluid in his abdomen and also surrounding his heart. Most critically, X-rays revealed nodules in his lungs. Our medical director diagnosed Bela with a very fast-growing cancer and there was very little likelihood he would have lasted more than a very stressful day or so. Reluctantly, Bela’s caregiving team made the decision that euthanasia was the right option. This was a very difficult choice...It is our custom to bury Sanctuary animals who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge at Angels Rest, the permanent resting place located in Angel Canyon. However, in this case we felt the right thing to do was to fulfill Bela’s owner’s last wishes. Therefore, we are cremating Bela and sending his ashes to Indiana so he can be buried with his owner, who passed away in November.

I'm glad they are together again.

she told me to put our dog to sleep

i said: No!

i told her i will if and when i have to & not before

our dog wasn't in the best shape but she wasn't on her death bed

until six weeks after my mom died

that was when i had to put our dog to sleep--(as if her life wasn't worth living without my mother here--which could be somewhat true i guess. i've heard of people dying within a short time of a significant person in their life; i think my beloved dog did that as well)
