Holy cow (slightly gross description)

I have lamented in this group about my cat Scout who has chronic renal failure and his poor appetite and recent weight loss. I have asked for and received many excellent suggestions from many of you (thanks!)

He is on the Royal Canin diet, we supplement it with kitty milk, a little kitty crack (for some reason Racael Ray's Nutrish gets him all excited) and for the last couple of months he has been great. 17 yrs old, running around again, great appetite (wanting to eat every 4 hours which I am fine with - give him little meals. Since most of his food is moist it's kinda gross to let it sit out), playing with his cat toys, swatting at the dogs' tails and then acting innocent - the usual.

Then poof Wednesday, started getting sick about 20 min after eating. Not like regurgitation, just little 1/4 tsp amounts of brownish stuff. Loss of appetite is back. After Wednesday no more vomiting, but he has slowed down and lost his zip. He went from a 7 on the energy scale to a 3 in 24 hrs. Called the vet to see if there was something to give him to settle his stomach, their response was that this was the beginning of the end and there wasn't much they could do.

FYI - 2nd opinion vet visit today. I am not in denial about the chronic renal failure - I am just struggling with how my cat can have such a drastic change and how you can make that diagnosis without seeing him.

He has been eating little amounts of food and it has been staying down (very small amounts of food) - he wants to eat when the dogs eat.

Our cat used to be a mouser (he was a stray when he found us) but over time he preferred fancy Blue Buffalo and Wellness meals. We have an ongoing mouse problem (we rent so we just deal with it). The dogs don't want anything to do with caught mice in traps, Scout thinks they are toys so we are vigilant about keeping traps out of kitty reach.

Apparently not vigilant enough.... woke up this morning to a purring kitty on my side - yay. He always wakes me up to eat. He wasn't too fussy, but he hasn't been the last few days. I grab his dish, fix his breakfast, walk out to the living room and....scream. Not proud of that.

He had dragged the mouse trap into the living room and well... I knew it was a mouse because of the trap...that was all.

Yelled at hubby to clean up (division of marital duties - I do outside tootsie roll patrol, he does critter crime scene clean up) while my cat circled us meowing for his food.

Holy crap - he still has a little fighter in him after all.

edit - changed title from holy crap to holy cow as to not give the wrong impression as to why this thread was kinda gross

Your love of your companion will have to carry you to make hard decisions. Seventeen years of love and kindness is a rich, full life and you can wrap that around the days to come. I know I still see my dear calico in the corner shadows after 6 years of grieving for her. But my present ginger butterball who likes to sleep on my head has tempered some of that grief.
