dog names

pretty sure nearly everyone has a couple of names for their dogs. i am usually kinda good at coming up w dog names, but current youngster had me stumped.
i started calling him punky, so that's his actual name.

but since his isnt a little punk anymore, and has grown into a great house bear, he now answers to bear. house bear, watch bear, polar bear.
he alerts me to everyone who crosses my property, and i can tell by where he is looking and the noise level what is going on outside.
i started saying he was my radar.
sooooo.
radar.

Sort-of like Native American names.

But my old stand-by, and the one I use most, is Dog—as in, “What are you doing, Dog?,” or, “Come here, Dog.”

4. I named my border collie Tag

because when he was a puppy you couldn’t catch him...we could never Tag him. Can’t tell you how many times I had animal control call me to verify his name on the registration I sent in every year...they’d say “you wrote Tag where his name is supposed to go”. I’d say”that’s his name”...it was like a Who’s On First playing out.

Pictures please!

One of the Pyr's.

Given your boy's radar, I always liked the name, Scout. Named one of my mini-donkey babies, Scout.

i sorta knew that, but i needed a puppy atm.
i just watched him follow that nose around, and figured he would do.
he is a pretty good varmint dog anyway.

i lost my last gladiator of a dog in my divorce, so it is really good to have one again.
i mean, i love my couch potato snuggle bunny big bully, but it is great to have this guy looking out for me.

dog who had fluffy orange fur with white markings came to live with my family after an icy, bitter, winter on our front porch.

Everywhere that he was white, he had freckles, so that became his name. Even strangers called this dog, "Freckles", so there really was no question on the subject.

I also had a saddle-shaded, tri-color dog named, "Inky". That name produced many a quizzical eyebrow when they saw that she was, not, in fact, a black dog.

Tired of trying to come up with one. We named our Pomeranian rescue Anniversary Present, because she was, and called her Annie.

Max, Sparky, Spike, Fang, Wolfie, etc are my favorites regardless of the sex of the dog.

Of course I only use their "given" names occasionally since the nick names that evolve are more personal like Baby, Poopie, Little Girl, ...

my rule is no people names, but i gave my bully my mom's cousin's nickname. and i had a boxer named barbie for the senator. iirc, i got her shortly after du sent her all those roses.

i just dread tagging a dog w what i think it is a funny sounding name, and then meeting someone w that name.

14. I was at our local Humane Society picking out a companion dog for the dog my mom

had just got. I had decided to name this new dog after an anti-depressant drug since she was to help keep the other dog company. I called my youngest daughter who was a pharmacy tech at a Costco to have her reel off several names of anti-depressant drugs. When I asked her to giv e me some names of anti-depressant drugs she responded with, “Dad, what’s wrong?” “Did your doctor put you on an anti-depressant?” Me, “No honey, just give me some anti-depressant names” (I am in the lobby of the Humane Society with the dog). She starts listing several names of the drugs and one was Lexapro. Since I recalled that a friend once had a Dalmatian named Lexi I exclaimed, “That’s it!” My daughter, in a freaked out voice says, “Your doctor put you on Lexapro?” I said, “No honey, you just named our new dog!” She was really confused at that point and I could not stop laughing.

Sophie and Lexi are best buds now for these last 5 years.

i have a few dozen chickens, and there are a few who just insist on asserting their individuality.
at first i called them all sybil. they would cluck around and i found myself answering them in sybil faulty's voice w- ooh i knooooow.
after that i stopped naming them, but sometimes they just step up and insist.
the first was cleo, who was a gold laced wyandotte. such a pretty bird, gold and black and shiny feathers. people always pointed them out as so pretty. i had 2, but cleo was just the queen of the yard.

currently have brownie, who is a mutt, just a classic fat hen. she refuses to sleep in the coop, so she greats me every morning at feeding time
muffy, is an easter egger cross, so she has those great whiskers and beards. she is the captain of the pirates. get a 6' fence they said. they wont get out them they said. all but muffy and robin, who apparently can hear the bugs in the neighbor's yard.
robin is a friendly one, but also has itchy feet. fortunately, they each pick on a different neighbor's yard.
then there is frannie, who somehow struck up a relationship w said bear. she just insisted on luring him in and pecking him in the face. frenemies.

somehow i lost control of this whole naming thing, i guess.
