Remarkable events in Annapolis on March 1st.

Last edited Sun Mar 3, 2013, 06:47 AM - Edit history (1)

On March 1st, the House Judiciary Committee and the Health and Government Operations Committee held a joint hearing on a gun ban proposed by Governor Martin O'Malley. The Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Del. Joe Vallario, pledged that the hearing would last as long as necessary to let everybody testify.

This occurred immediately after a rally organized by the Governor in support of the bill. The attendance appears to have been between 300 and 500 (for honesty's sake, this is according to unofficial estimates made by friends of mine), and was populated by many schoolchildren bussed in from Baltimore County, and allegedly three commercial buses registered in New Jersey. (For comparison, a rally against the gun ban on Februrary 6th was attended by about 4,000 people, according to the Department of General Services. The Senate office building was temporarily shut down by the fire marshal due to overcrowding.)

The joint committee hearing began shortly after noon, and lasted until 3:45 AM. The final tally was approximately 1,321 in opposition to the gun ban, and 34 in support.

4. a gathering of gun zombies, is all

Glaug, trying desperately to convince readers that marylanders oppose their governor's guncontrol bill: The joint committee hearing began shortly after noon.. final tally was approximately 1,321 in opposition to the gun ban, 31 in support.
.. a rally against the gun ban on Februrary 6th was attended by about 4,000 people..

What glaug is so proud of is the gun lobby 'call to arms' which activates state wide gun zombies to arrive at a certain rally point to either support 2ndAmendment activities or oppose guncontrol efforts. Yes it can get from twos up to thousands of gunzombies, all wobbly walking towards greater guns galore policy.
Glaug downplayed supporters as between 300 & 500 (including children), here's his link: More than 1,300 people signed up to testify.. overwhelmingly against it. A mid morning rally to support the plan drew a crowd estimated at 1,000.

Read the underlying truth, what marylanders overall think of O'Malley's guncontrol bill:
Maryland residents overwhelmingly support Gov. Martin O’Malley’s plan to force gun buyers to submit to fingerprinting, safety training and more background checks, according to a new Washington Post poll.
Across the state, fully 85% back the governor’s licensing plan and 73% do so “strongly.” They also support banning high-capacity ammunition clips and assault weapons — two other portions of O’Malley’s (D) bill..
Marylanders are more supportive of stricter gun-control measures than Americans overall. They also tilt in favor of measures beyond what O’Malley and the legislature have seemed willing to do, such as putting an armed guard in every school in the state, a proposal backed nationally by the National Rifle Association. {egads}
Residents in both districts {PG co & Balto} overwhelmingly back stricter gun laws, as do those in Montgomery County...
another link: Though polls show a super-majority of Maryland voters of all stripes support an assault weapons ban and stricter licensing requirements

http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-02-26/local/37300657_1_gun-control-gun-violence-stricter-gun

So what we have in truth, is not glaug's misleading 1300 to 30 maryland straw poll opposing O'malley's bill & assault wpn ban, but overwhelming support for the bill in general & support for his awb.
In light of this revelation for you glaug, don't you think you should at least explain why your OP is misleading & not representative of marylanders in general, just a zealot reaction & gathering due a statewide call to arms of gun enthusiasts?

Maryland Senate passed Gov. Martin O'Malley's comprehensive gun control plan on Thursday {f28}.. the Senate voted 28-19 to pass Senate Bill 281, the Firearm Safety Act of 2013. If it passes the House, the bill would ban the sale of most assault weapons, require gun buyers to provide fingerprints and make it harder for people with mental illness..

I'll try to have more information for you shortly, including results of another (more transparent) poll which contradicts the Governor's numbers.

EDIT: I was experiencing DNS issues that prevented me from accessing some websites. My inability to get this information was not the result of a second DoS attack.

One question, though: If Marylanders support gun bans so strongly, why aren't the bill supporters organizing and testifying? If the Governor's poll reflected reality, they should've dwarfed our numbers. Those who appeared for the rally failed to even sign up to testify, and I suspect it's because they were largely brought in from out of state to create the illusion of passionate support for the ban.

The crowd estimate of 1,000 is remarkably unlikely to me, considering I saw the crowd with my own eyes at peak attendance. There were not a thousand people at Lawyer's Mall.

7. junk science quackery polls from Md shall issue

I can see why you posted only links to your maryland polls done by susquehanna polling, rather than citing results; it was evidently done FOR marylandshallissue dot org, obviously a pro gun concealed carry organization.
Don't you tire of masking your specious pro gun efforts, glaug?
I'd otherwise be embarassed to cite this as a reputable poll, but glaug asked for it. Observe how specious the questions are worded, how it combines separate concepts, its because it's by a progun ccw group:

(Maryland) Statewide Poll Highlights DATE: Feb 6, 2013 .. key findings from the statewide telephone poll Jan 30-Feb 2 {2013} with 700 registered (likely) voters in Maryland.
I. Voters Reaffirm Strong Support for Fundamental Rights of Self-Protection Voters show nearly unanimous support for reaffirming their constitutional rights to both protect and defend themselves with the use of firearms. They similarly reject the notion that government should have the final say when it comes to decisions about one’s personal choice of firearms:

Q1. Do you believe that you have the right to protect yourself and your family from a criminal act? 1. Yes 672 96% ... 2. No 19 03% ... 3. Undecided 8 01%

Wheeee, the right to self defense predates the bible. Who voted no? children under 6?

Q2. Do you believe you have a right to use a firearm to protect yourself and your family? 1. Yes 581 83% ... 2. No 92 13%

Yawn.. this is a cosmetic specious question to a myriad of tangential concerns regarding firearms. Doesn't prove much of anything at all regarding current guncontrol efforts. What has it to do with O'Malley's guncontrol bill?

Q3. Should your choice of firearms for personal self-defense be limited to only those that the govt allows for hunting? 1. Yes 271 39% .. 2. No 353 50% .. 3. Undecided 65 09%
Splits near parity, only half definitely said 'no'. And what has this to do with O'malley's guncontrol bill?
Then, next Q4, 55% marylanders support armed gds in schools, 37% oppose, yawn.

Q5. Should law abiding citizens be faced with the prospect of losing their jobs, their security clearance or suffer a lifetime ban from the constitutional right to own a firearm if they are found to have made non-violent, technical violations during the licensing or registration process of the proposed new gun laws?
1. Yes 143 20% .. 2. No 426 61% .. 3. Undecided 116 17% ..4. Refuse 15 02%

Cheeses, look at the leading question, I bet half those answering 'no' were weeping 'no don't take their jobs away from them for misspelling their addresses'.

Q6. Which of the following reforms would do the most to prevent future mass murders?
A) Prohibiting law-abiding persons from owning semi-automatic rifles, or…
B) Strengthening our laws regarding mental health records to keep all firearms out of the hands of the mentally ill,

http://marylandshallissue.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Toplines-Maryland-Statewide-Feb2013.pdf

Wow, note the wording from this quack poll, prohibit guns from law abiding or prohibit guns from the mentally ill. .. the quack poll tries to imply that people are against an assault weapon ban since they favor more mental health regs. When asked whether they support an assault weapon ban marylanders support by over 55% or so. Both these issues get solid support from marylanders. It's just a clever ruse to trick readers into thinking there is weak support for an AWB.
This poll is specious & QUACKERY, put out by a pro gun concealed carry group. I'd be embarassed if I were you, glaug, to have even posted this junk science.

I sure couldn't find any, and he's not more reputable than Maryland Shall Issue.

I still want to know -- if so many Marylanders support the bill, why didn't they testify? Hundreds of gun control advocates (not necessarily Marylanders) were right there, feet away from the House office building where they could have signed up to speak to the committee. They didn't even sign up, let alone actually speak. There is no passion for taking away civil rights, only for preserving them.
