Is Snoop Dogg The Voice We Need To End Gun Violence?

The lyrics in Serial Killa, a track on Snoop Dogg’s breakthrough album, Doggystyle, are emblematic of the violence associated with the former gangsta rapper from California. The main message of the song: if anyone insulted him, he would shoot to kill.

More than twenty years after the release of his premiere album, Snoop Dogg, now known as Snoop Lion, is an outspoken voice in the ongoing campaign to end gun violence.

“We are the voices that the youth listen to; they respect us. So, we are the ones who can put a half pause on the gun violence when we speak as one – as a whole rap community,” he said during a “No Guns Allowed” event last Thursday. During a time when gun violence is projected to kill more people than car accidents, and violent lyrics used to criminalize people of color, Snoop’s call for no more guns is both timely and necessary.

The title of the event was inspired by Snoop’s entrance into anti-gun advocacy two years ago. After re-branding himself in 2012 — by changing his name to Snoop Lion and releasing the reggae album Resurrection — his song No Guns Allowed became a hit single. In it, the rapper-turned-singer croons, “Let the music play, me don’t want no more gunplay. When the bodies hit the ground, there’s nothing left to say, ay, ay. Me don’t want to see no more innocent blood shed. Me don’t want to see no more youth dead. Come hear me now.”

So he made his initial fortune lauding the criminal use of firearms by persons of color; now he wants to speak from the other side. Does he repudiate his former actions and give up the fortune he made? What, pray tell, are your thoughts on this issue?

now he has made his money on that culture will he give it all up? I will wait for his apology to all that he influenced over his career into drugs and guns.

A stone-faced Snoop Dogg pleaded no contest to felony gun and drug charges today (April 11) in Pasadena, Calif., and avoided what could have been a years-long prison sentence.

Rapper Snoop Dogg held on second gun charge in a month

Rapper Snoop Dogg was arrested for investigation of illegally possessing a handgun and drugs as he left NBC Studios after performing on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," police said.

I knew it was to good to be true that the host from the other gun forum posted without comment again.

I am curious on what the OP's thoughts are so we could have a nice dialog on the issue. I am sure it will not happen though.

...I think it should be supported.

I share your skepticism regarding his motivation; but why look a gift horse in the mouth?

just calling out the fact he is a hypocrite if he does not go a little deeper and say how he made his money was wrong and he broke many laws to include illegal gun possession and being arrested multiple times for drug possession. I think pot should be legal but hhe broke the laws and should have been put away for a long time for those issues. By buying that illegal pot he enabled the drug lords that killed many innocent people.

...regarding any incidents of Snoops' possessing illegal guns or condoning gun violence in his music. I think it would likely be hard, though, for Snoop to own up to those things and save face with his audience. I guess I'm happy to take whatever small gains that come along.

As far as his use of 420 goes, I don't blame Snoop for supporting gangs/drugs, etc. I just see it as a cultural thing in many ways that was created by the government's ridiculous War on Drugs.

My 2 cents!
