Open carry advocates say theyll be at the Fort Worth Convention Center this week for the state GOP convention to encourage a change in state law to allow open carry of handguns in Texas. State GOP chairman Steve Munisteri says its fine if demonstrators want to gather outside the hall, but cant bring their rifles inside. He warns that would violate the prohibition against carrying guns anyplace that has a permit to sell alcohol.
Obviously, theyll need to secede from the GOP or Texas, or both. But perhaps not immediately. The gun-toters of Texas have a lot on their plate these days. The NRA, they can handle, apparently. After a post on the NRAs News and Issues page criticized their strategy of carrying assault rifles into retail establishments as both weird and scary, not to mention unneighborly, Texas long gun open carry groups pushed back hard, and the NRA quickly backed down. But they did not fare nearly as well when asked a simple question about their public gun-toting strategy by MSNBCs Joy Reid.
Do you think it would scare people? Reid asked repeatedly, when she had Tov Henderson, communications director for Open Carry Texas, on The Reid Report on May 3. I cant get you to answer a very simple question, of do you think it scares people to see, let alone one armed person, but a bunch of armed people in this day and age, when we have so many mass shootings? Do you think it scares people?

(6,185 posts)So Salon has another cow about guns. By now they must have a nice herd going. I hope it's a dairy herd, we need more ice cream for summer.
I think the whole Open carry thing is kinda pointless, but based on the people on DU with their drawers twisted in a knot, you'd think dozens have died as a result of these bozos. How dare they offend your delicate sensibilities. (Aren't we supposed to be the delicate flowers?) Oh and they're fat too. Only on DU and about gun owners is it OK to make fun of fat people. Wonder how that would go over ion HoF?
If these OC guys are looking for attention, the short sighted and utterly ineffective gun control fans are giving it to them.
All with no visible impact on these gun owners or carrying in general beyond wishful thinking in online threads here and there.

I would be willing to bet that it wouldn't go any further than the last try. If I'm right it would prove that the NRA hasn't lost America.
In passing most gun owners including me see no need to carry long guns such as AR-15s in restaurants or other public places. A legally concealed handgun is different as it doesn't scare or intimidate anyone.
