"(T)he idea that your stockpile of AR-15s could do anything against US troops with actual artillery

was always so stupid that it's crazy to think that even the 3% crowd ever genuinely believed it."

From a tweet posted three days ago, referenced with approval here:

Less than three weeks prior to that tweet:

"Afghan peace talks put on hold by Taliban"

https://www.democraticunderground.com/113325129

KABUL, Afghanistan — The Afghan government on Saturday announced that it was preparing for direct negotiations with the Taliban in the next two weeks, a major step in efforts to end the war.

But the Taliban rejected it.

The militant group’s spokesman said the Taliban was steadfast in its refusal to directly negotiate with the Afghan side until the United States announces a schedule for withdrawing its 14,000 troops in the country.

The episode was the latest confusion in the process.

The insurgents and the Americans are nearing a deal after seven rounds of protracted negotiations in Qatar — talks that have excluded the Afghan government.

In all my years here at DU, I've yet to see the sorts of people who express opinions of the sort shown at the beginning
of the OP explain news items of the sort shown immediately below it.

I daresay the implications ruin an oft-repeated 'faith-promoting rumor' of theirs...

of private ownership of military style weapons against a military armed with "actual artillery".

The lower example shows the real world effect that the Taliban (mostly armed with hand carried weapons) has. They can control whether negotiations to end the war even happen!

The US has spent nearly a trillion dollars in Afghanistan since 2001, with "actual artillery" and aircraft, and drones, and missiles, and the entire panoply of modern war - yet the Taliban persist.

The search phrase you are looking for is "asymmetric warfare". Check it out. You may come to a clearer understanding how and why lightly armed forces can effectively resist a modern military.

Some places in the world the military are a special class. Not in the US.
"By calling attention to 'a well regulated militia,' 'the security of the nation,' and the right of each citizen 'to keep and bear arms,' our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy... The Second Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason I believe the Second Amendment will always be important." - JFK
"A free people ought to be armed." - George Washington

Every vet and active duty service member I've encountered sees themselves as civilians first with their role being a volunteer in service to others. In the very unlikely event that the military is set upon the free people, there will likely be another revolution but don't worry about it. Most of them will be on my side, on our side.

This quote from long ago is the best articulation of my feelings, "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them."
