When I graduated college, a guy I respected a lot made a great point to me. He said that I always had a great degree to fall back on (B.S. Chemistry), but why not try something totally different with your life and be an Infantryman. If you love, make a career out of it. If you don’t, go be a chemist when your commitment is done.

Well, I didn’t make it a career. I don’t know if I’d do it again, but I’m proud as all hell that I was an Infantryman. I gotta say, that guy was absolutely correct with his advice about life.

My daughters will never be in the Infantry, but I’ll encourage them to take risks when they’re young and try something different with their lives before they get married, start a family, and buy a house. I just turned 40 and I’m really happy about where I am in life and I have very few regrets.
