Related: About this forumFor our allies, have you heard of LOWPAWS?
League of White People Against White Supremacy or SURJ, Showing up for Racial Justice? Found out about them thru some friends.
I bring this for your consideration because I have many friends who I believe feel just as helpless as I do about the ongoing legacy of supremacy. But, like many of us, they won't stop talking about it and quick to shut it down in their spaces, and it's not all about protests, but more about how we relate to each other that can be addressed immediately. I also know there's no room in the structure to support allies but still they get that we're in this mess together.
This is from LOWPAWS's closed group FB page, "This group was designed to act as a staging point for white people to engage other white people on the subjects of race and racism. This is a group that acts as a support system for #BlackLivesMatter to lift and amplify black voices, never to supplant or replace them. We are not here to FIX racism. We are not saviors and we are not looking for cookies or even thank yous." https://www.facebook.com/groups/lorwp/1027765517248171/?notif_t=group_activity&hc_location=ufi
SURJ, I don't know too much about. From their site, "SURJ is a national network of groups and individuals organizing white people for racial justice. Through community organizing, mobilizing and education, SURJ moves white people to act as part of a multi-racial majority for justice with passion and accountability. We work to connect people across the country while supporting and collaborating with local and national racial justice organizing efforts. SURJ provides a space to build relationships, skills and political analysis to act for change.
We envision a society where we struggle together with love, for justice, human dignity and a sustainable world."
I'm hoping someone will join, check them out and report back here http://www.showingupforracialjustice.org/

(24,544 posts)I also know that there is a growing effort to actually provide anti-racism training in schools all over the world. The UN even had a couple of programs. One of them was called cyberschoolbus.
I think that teaching kids about this and getting them to be aware of this stuff as early as possible is wonderful. I've never heard of the program you've mentioned but I think that it sounds fabulous. Wish there was a chapter (or 20) in every town.

(8,709 posts)Me, too, because I'm immediately reminded of the white officer who brought his chief down for harassing a black woman in the most dispicable way. It turns out this chief has been writing reports for years using vile racial slurs. So it was easy to nail his ass. Now, his family is being threatened by townspeople, his wife run off the road, his kids bullied and beaten, when before they were a model family. He says he has no regrets but prays his family will be okay. And he's still on the job.
Wish there was a chapter in his town too, Number23, to rally behind him. I just hope that this coalition of justice warriors grows.
Thanks for the talking about the UN programs, needed especially now when the history books are trying to say we were immigrant workers or something insane like that.

(24,544 posts)There's been so much crap coming out about police behavior this may be one that I actually missed.
This is a wonderful group and I wish them all the success in the world. But you and I both know they have a MAJOR series of uphill battles to tackle and it is going to be damn hard for them.

Just the other day, a bunch of white student protestors surrounded their fellow black students in South Africa when police showed up because the kids were peacefully protesting increased school fees. As some commenters noted the white kids deserve praised, but it's also glaring how police were ready to deal with black bodies.

I know we probably can't save the world in our lifetime but these kids give me hope of a better one to come. I'm seeing these incidents popping up all over the place

(24,544 posts)How in the HELL are police turning water cannons on STUDENTS who are doing nothing but protesting student fees??!
Just when you begin to despair at the progress that S Africa was supposed to be making, you see it. It's in the faces and actions of those white kids surrounding their black peers. Like you said, these kids give me hope. Not much hope, but I'll take whatever I can get.
The story in Oregon is absolutely terrifying. Part of me applauds the cop's actions but another part of me wants him to grab his family and run as far and as fast as he can. And I imagine that this is what life must be like for alot of black police officers who try to stand up for themselves or their communities. Hell, it's probably five times worse.

(8,709 posts)in stopping the police in that one protest. And I just read a few minutes ago the students scored a victory! "We agreed that there will be a zero increase of university fees in 2016, President Zuma said, "after a meeting with student leaders."
Beautiful how joining together to fight brutality and being used as revenue works.
That was my first instinct for the officer, too - just get out of there! But I've read that the city left no doubt that they're standing with him. Like you said, it still leaves me uneasy but I'll take what I can get

(31,849 posts)looks interesting (though I can't see their FB page) ... This:
is a mission statement that, if practiced, will go a long way to moving forward ... But I doubt many of our "Allies" on this site will be comfortable in that space.
JustAnotherGen
(31,810 posts)I mean - in that space there's probably not a lot of room to accuse black folks of being racist because we have questions about prior words and actions . . . or inaction. And quiet. Etc. etc.
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)not a lot of space to refer to Black folks as "race-naggers/baiters", Stockholm Syndrome suffers, or low information voters; nor, space to chastise its membership for speaking for Black folks, when repeating what Black folks have said.
Probably not a good fit for the masses of DU whites, outside of a precious few.

(8,709 posts)Oh, No! I know they're a closed group so all I see are my friends, the admins, and some of the members.
Yeah, about uncomfortable allies, I cannot waste energy on them.
