He was black and his story and its exploitation is what we now call cultural appropriation.

in, "Badass: A Relentless Onslaught of the Toughest Warlords, Vikings, Samurai, Pirates, Gunfighters, and Military Commanders to Ever Live," by Ben Thompson. Very interesting and fun book for a quick read.
