Dallas County (TX) Commissioners backing Slavery Reparations

*Tee Hee* - When a Juneteenth Resolution goes awry!

It's non binding and doesn't impact taxes but the only one to change their vote and abstain was a Republican! <-Color me not shocked!

Dallas County commissioners unwittingly back slavery reparations

The agenda for Tuesday’s meeting gave no sign that reparations would be a topic. The “Juneteenth Resolution,” commemorating the day slaves in Texas learned of their freedom, seemed from its description to be just another routine proclamation. Others approved on Tuesday expressed support for Men’s Health Month — it’s June — the American Kidney Fund, and an employee in the tax office who’s been on the job for 25 years.

But Price’s resolution went beyond taking note of Juneteenth; it included a long list of injustices endured by blacks, from slavery to Jim Crow to predatory lending practices. Then, in its final paragraph, it declared that the suffering of African-Americans should be “satisfied with monetary and substantial reparations.”

Price read the entire document aloud at the meeting. But that happens with every resolution, and the commissioners didn’t seem to be listening with a critical ear. With no discussion, Price’s resolution was approved by voice vote.

Then, about an hour later, the other commissioners complained that they hadn’t been given copies of the resolution before they voted. It wasn’t part of their meeting packet, they said. Nor was it posted on the county’s website. Price said in an interview that he didn’t know how that happened. He said he wrote the resolution after reading an article in The Atlantic making the case for reparations. Other ethnic groups, including American Indians and Japanese-Americans, have received compensation for past mistreatment, he noted.

Used to be in West Oak cliff district with Elba Garcia, got moved over to JWP's district this last redistricting go around. Also in School district 6, where one of his lady warriors is in the run off. Not to worry, I will be at the school to vote against her on Saturday. It is just a matter of time before JWP goes to jail. The Feds have been investigating him for a long time.

Other than I LIKED this little piece of shenanigans.

ETA - I have an indie populist leaning right caucasian council man in my town in NJ that I see eye to eye on about 80% of the issues -

I totally see him pulling a stunt like this in our town!

I quoted that in an advocacy meeting recently because there had been no response after repeated inquiries to authorities and it was what we were paying for, but in their milieau. It still needed to be done for those we represent.

We didn't want to step on their toes since we work with them, but after we discussed the months of inaction and passing the buck, the quote pushed to board go ahead and do the work instead of asking their permission. It was clogging our agenda and the authorities apparently were not going to get their act together.

What was added to the Juneteenth! resolution needs a debate to resolve history and move forward. It's not the guy who put it in there who is at fault, if the GOP didn't bother to read it In fact, others who did read it and didn't say anything may agree!
