NFL tells Alex to get rid of the Giants cap...

Alex Smith often showed up for last season's post-game press conferences wearing a San Francisco Giants cap. If the 49ers quarterback does so again, he says he'll be fined $15,000 by the NFL.

The reason: A Giants cap constitutes non-sponsored gear, and players must abide by the NFL's dress code 90 minutes before and after each game.

One proposed solution: Have the Giants fund that post-game attire for such a loyal fan.

"Yeah, can you call Larry Baer for me?" Smith asked reporters in reference to the Giants' chief executive.

It's not a big deal but I remember Joe Montana could be seen at times wearing a Giants cap on the sidelines. Demonstrates support for the community..the NFL can stick it. No Fun League for sure.

Alex used to wear a Giants cap after virtually every game last year, so I took notice when it was absent from his head this season..at least now I know why.

3. Could be a contractual obligation

between the outfitter and the NFL and/or said team regarding selling licensed gear. In other words, "we'll (outfitter) pay you (NFL/team) a brazillion dollars for the right to outfit an NFL team but we must be the exclusive outfitter."

Additionally, the NFL makes no money when someone buys a licensed MLB cap. That's why they get pissed.

The rules suck, but from their perspective it could get out of hand if they let it slide...I can see some guys wearing some pretty obnoxious stuff.

What would $elig do?

edit: I seem to recall Pittsburgh players doing this sort of thing routinely, as well as showing up at each other's games and the like.

from the NFL rule. The rule applies to 90 minutes before and after each game.

The NBA has their silly Mitchell & Ness ban.

If this is the case, their merchandiser is getting their "advertising" either way.
