SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Pablo Sandoval came to San Francisco Giants camp fat this year, like he does pretty much every year, because there are two truths about Pablo Sandoval, and one of them is he does not do skinny.
The other is that he's a remarkable hitter, preternaturally gifted like only a handful of players, maybe less. At 5-foot-11 (give or take no, take two inches) and 262 pounds (give or take no, give 20 pounds), Sandoval hits everything everywhere anytime anywhere. If anyone in baseball today is going to stroke a single off a pitch that bounces before it reaches home plate, it's him.
This is Sandoval's dichotomy, what makes him who he is and the relationship between the two may be parasitic. Sandoval does not hit like a madman because he's fat. It could be argued he's fat because he hits like a madman because his success in spite of his weight gives him little motivation to shed it, and because his bat makes him a hero in his native Venezuela where he returns annually and comes back heavier, and because this character he plays, the silly Kung Fu Panda, doesn't fly for a skinny guy....

(31,131 posts)BTW, his elbow ailment is caused by a bone spur. It was not wise for him to play winter ball, IMO. Between this and the weight issue and the rape bullet he dodged last year, you start wondering about his judgment.
If he returns to form, and the Giants falter, I also wonder if he turns up in trade talks.

(9,709 posts)I wouldn't be surprised if surgery is eventually called for. If so, they need to do it now. Pablo isn't going to be traded. He's only 1 year into a 3 year contract which is a real bargain for the player he's become. Now, if he can only stay on the field.

(16,113 posts)really someone that is "preternaturally gifted" that "hits everything everywhere anytime anywhere". As far as hitting a ball of a bounce, I'd still take Ichiro even at his age.
Upton
(9,709 posts)Yes, who was that masked man who was World Series MVP?
hughee99
(16,113 posts)Hideki Matsui, Mike Lowell, David Eckstein, or Jermaine Dye?
World series MVP doesn't make one a "preternaturally gifted" hitter. Such a hitter hits ALL the time. See Tony Gwynn, or if you want someone a little closer to home, Barry Bonds.

(9,709 posts)I just temporarily lost my mind when I saw you were trying to insult the Panda...it happens. Despite his weight, Sandoval is an extraordinarily gifted athlete however. And while he may not be the Ichiro of 6-7 years ago, I don't agree with your claim about today's Ichiro, Pablo can still hit balls out that many players can't even reach. He's also ambidextrous.

(16,113 posts)in his relatively short period of time for me to agree with such high praise. Admittedly, I don't get to see too many Giants games, so I may not appreciate is abilities as a bad ball hitter.
Upton
(9,709 posts)both for health considerations and his range at 3B. Thing is, he's not built that way...he's probably always going to be overweight. If the Giants could just get him to be like Prince Fielder, who despite being listed at 275 has played in all 162 games each of the last 2 seasons, everything would be fine and the weight issue talk would go away.

(31,131 posts)plus having the option for Fiellder to DH occasionally. If the right offer came along for Sandoval I'd be tempted.

(9,709 posts)The Giants infield depth is thin already. Arias is a better fielder and can hit some, but he's nowhere near the power threat Sandoval is. There's not much in the system at that position either. The Giants trade Pablo, they better get a Ryan Zimmerman type in return, signed.

(31,131 posts)But if Belt has finally arrived it makes a trade a little more easier to stomach (no pun intended). If Panda ends up on the bench mid season for what ever reason -- muscle tear, bone spur, fatigue -- he's just as useless as if he's been traded. I'm not saying it will happen. But if the team falters because of age, injury or fatigue, Sabean might want to use Sandoval to help reload, provided the value is there.
