Oops, he said it again.
...I think for us now, talking about winning a World Cup is just not realistic..." U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann Klinsmann first said this in December...(N)o surprise, the...quote became a thing for media commentators...
...The United States has been serious about soccer for less than two decades...At this stage of the sports progression in this country, it is no more realistic to expect the U.S. to win the World Cup than to expect Stephen F. Austin to win the NCAA Tournament...
Klinsmann is not declaring his players will decline to compete as hard as possible to accomplish whatever they can while theyre alive in the World Cup. Hes saying the U.S. as a soccer nation has a ways to go...
(P)eople...should wonder why the flow of U.S.-trained players as capable as Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley not only has failed to accelerate in the recent years, it has come close to shutting down. The U.S. has not performed well at a FIFA youth tournament...since Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore excelled (in) 2007...
Hell, the U.S. had to go to Germany just to find this coach!
As for finding enough world-class American soccer players, the problem is that most of them are too busy trying to play pro football, basketball and baseball. What also needs to happen is for soccer to reach more American urban youth.

(29,322 posts)The World Cup? Brazil are the heavy favorites not only are they loaded they have home field they also have home continent advantage. I think Spain has the best chance out of non-South American teams. Argentina & Uruguay have good odds as well. I think the Cup will be won by one of those 4 teams.
US has a solid team but they have the toughest road of any team. Not only are they grouped w/ Germany & Argentina (as well as a Ghana team that has their number) but they have the furthest travel(though w/ a roster made up of MLS players it isn't the disadvantage it would be for other teams).
They need to stop Ghana, upset Portugal which they are capable of doing, and hopefully by their game in Germany they can settle for a draw or face a German team resting their starters if they won their first 2 which in this scenario Portugal losing twice means they'll advance regardless of the outcome.
On edit - Regarding the Stephen F Austin analogy I see the US as more like an Iowa or Creighton probability of winning it all but has to began the tournament w/ match-ups against Arizona, Wisconsin, and Stephen F Austin(they appear to be a good Ghana equivalent)

(39,369 posts)By far the most fucked up team in 2010.
Deschamps has them playing well, but no Ribery though. Time for Karim to let the whole world know how good he is.
They have a good draw so I expect they'll die in the quarters. Knowing France, they'll lose to Honduras on Sunday and the conneries will start to fly. J'adore mes Bleus tout-de-même.

(44,575 posts)(Goalkeeper Tim) Howard admitted the loss hurt, but said the team "couldn't have given any more. What a great game of football," he said. "We got beat by a really good team. It's heartache, it hurts."
Awed spectators turned to social media during -- and after -- the game to praise the U.S. star, calling Howard the "glue," the "wall," "the man of the match," and "the one man who can lead a team to victory," according to Twitter.

Well, there's the answer -- all the U.S. has to do is find we can find twelve more Tim Howards within the next four years! See you then!
