Pinehurst No. 2: course challenges unlike any other U.S. Open

Ron Kroichick / San Francisco Chronicle • 6-11-14

This week's Open will unfold on a layout unlike any in the previous 113 editions of this tournament. Pinehurst officials, encouraged by the U.S. Golf Association, removed 40 acres of lush, Bermuda-grass rough in favor of the original sandy waste areas used by famed architect Donald Ross.

Television spectators need to remain open-minded as the images flash across their screen the next four days. They must accept splotches of brown along the edges of Pinehurst's fairways and resist the temptation to think this is all just too weird.

They're looking at a rustic, distinctive twist on America's national championship. Fear not, those who are weary of the modern power game: Accuracy still matters. Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and their long-hitting colleagues still fervently want to keep tee shots in the fairway.

But if those shots stray off path, the ball could find a wide variety of resting places. The terrain along the fairways is natural hardpan with clumps of nasty wiregrass, native plants/vegetation and pine needles. It's a patchwork collection of unpredictable challenges.

Golf is likely viewing this Fathers Day Weekend ... and I'm looking forward to it.

However, he could be looking for a hot stock tip?

. . .but i'd rather play off of the Pinehurst waste areas than the jungles they usually groom at a US Open.
I'm a 2 handicap. I can hit off hardpan just fine, but i'm simply not strong enough to get the club through the "fescue" at most US Opens. (To be honest, i clearly can't hit it far enough to play on that course, but if it were 6500 yards, i could play it!)
This actually favors the precision player/ball striker, which is a refresehing change.

just once a year make it so driving it straight it what wins. real penalties for not hitting the fairway. Is that asking too much.

. . .hardpan is a problem because they're so used to be able to control spin. That's not an issue for me. The ball spins however it's going to spin. I don't have the ability to control it. There is no "a little more" or "a bit less" spin for me.

And, from what i saw yesterday, there is still some very heavy rough in some driving areas.

Besides that, i kind of like seeing guys hit relatively good shots and NOT being able to control where the ball ends up on the green. The greens are fast, and the mounds around them are skinned. I saw 5 or 6 guys hit the green and end up in jail.

That's as much fun for me. Any golf course can let the grass grow. At least this is a little different than normal US Opens.

And, if it doesn't rain, that hardpan is going to be a bigger and bigger problem.

I'm with ya, Wilt. I like to see these guys really tested. But there are more ways to make a golf course hard than growing the grass long.

The course is playing too easy. It's not the minus 10. There's too many guys under par.

As long as silverspoon Phil is not on TV anymore, i'm happy anyway.

but i tuned into the golf channel for the recap. It sounds like they tricked it up today because the scores were too low according to Colin Montgomerie. kaymer hits it 20-30 yards wide of the fairway and he eagles the hole. Is that punishing a wayward shot?. I don't think so. Putting past the hole and it runs off the green. That is really a joke.
