Carmelo Anthony Opts Out of New York Knicks Contract

Carmelo Anthony has informed the New York Knicks in writing that he will opt out of the final year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent, according to multiple sources.

The Knicks recently expressed the hope that Anthony would not do this. Team president Phil Jackson said recently that he hoped Anthony would consider opting into the final year of his contract and testing free agency in the summer of 2015. Jackson has privately expressed that hope to Anthony several times since the end of the regular season.

The Chicago Bulls are one of several teams with whom Anthony would consider signing, according to sources.

Snip

Anthony can sign a maximum contract worth $129 million over five years with the Knicks. He can ink a maximum deal worth $96 million over four years with another team.

I do not know if I would be able to leave $33 million on the table. I realize Carmelo Anthony already has a large amount of money, but I do not know if it is a good idea to leave that much money on the table.

He can still sign w/ the Knicks if they make some moves in free agency.

While $33 is a lot, he can still earn $96 and he isn't getting any younger, came in the league same year as Lebron and Darko Milicic. He has a window that is about to be closing.

but I can't think of a single instance where the team he played for was the best in the NBA.

The closest is 2009 when Denver also had Nene(who is doing great things for Washington), Billups, and Kenyon Martin. They made it to the Western Conference Finals in an exciting series (especially the first 3 games) against the LA Lakers. They had opportunities to win games 1 and game 3. Blew a big lead in the 4th in game 3 and a chance to go up 2-1 in the series.

However, the Gasol-Bryant combo in '09-'10 was unstoppable on offense. (consider this comment from a Suns fan who watched their team fall to them in the following. How do you double-team Gasol(who was the best offensive center in the league) and still guard Kobe?

Carmelo is one of the greatest scorers in NBA history and the strategy that gives your offense the best chance of success is having your best scorer take the majority of your shots. You're not incorrect though but the only way to win championships is to play on the best roster. If Melo goes to Chicago and plays w/ Derek Rose they become an instant title contender. (Miami needs to improve defensively and Melo doesn't help there -- you can't win titles when you're giving up over 50% shooting)

Knicks could have been a better team w/ a healthy Amare (who used to be significantly better than Bosh) but if he does play for a better roster an Iso-Melo offense isn't going to win them a championship.

He's a ball stopper who played as well as he possibly could this year on a team that went 37-45. You can double-team him fairly easily without paying the price, particularly late in games when fatigue sets in. The only way he will ever win a championship is as the #2 option on a great team. Can he deal with that? Not sure.

Exhibit A - Jeremy Lin...they made the playoffs the year before, Carmelo wanted Lin gone, Lin went...it's all about him...not saying Lin is great, but Carmelo couldn't stand someone else getting so much attention.

I don't know why any superstar would sign a contract expecting a guy who played only 49 games in the last 3 seasons COMBINED, to be healthy.

His ego wont allow him to be a #2. I'd love for him to go to LA and have Kobe to deal with. I think Shaq still has nightmares of his LA days.

Melo wants to be the straw that stirs the drink. He'll get what he wants in Chicago or Houston.
