USA-Portugal Tie Is Most-Watched Soccer Game in American History

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/world-cup-ratings-usa-portugal-714017

UPDATED: Viewership for Sunday's 2-2 draw surged to 18.2 million viewers — making it ESPN's biggest non-football telecast ever.

The Sunday evening game time proved especially advantageous for ESPN, with viewership maxing out at 22.96 million between 7:30 and 8 p.m. ET. It nearly doubled the first American outing at the 2014 World Cup, with their 2-1 victory over Ghana averaging 11.1 million viewers.

In the West Palm Beach area (where I live) the ESPN rating was 11.4/19 - which was 4 HH ratings higher than the Ghana/US match. That made this market 4th in the country for viewing! Too bad I don't sell for ESPN today!!

The "soccer is boring" crowd isn't going to like this. Though honestly, I don't know how anybody can continue to make that claim after last night..

The USA had won their first match, so there was a buzz about the Portugal match. Also, it was played on Sunday at 6pm - when not a whole lot else was going on. Everyone I know was tuned into the game - even those that don't normally watch were interested. I'm disappointed we didn't win, but it was a hell of a show nonetheless.

Tomorrow's Germany contest will be a tougher sell, given that it's during work hours. I, for one, will be taking a 3 hour lunch break. Hopefully many others will as well.

Because of all of the people watching in groups at work and on streams.
