Andrew Wiggins Picked First in NBA Draft

The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Kansas guard Andrew Wiggins with the first overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft Thursday night.

The Milwaukee Bucks followed by taking Duke forward Jabari Parker with the No. 2 pick. The Philadelphia 76ers chose injured Kansas center Joel Embiid with the third overall pick.

Wiggins, 19, averaged 17.1 points and 5.9 rebounds in his one season with the Jayhawks. Wiggins said he expects to make an immediate impact in Cleveland.

"Just going in and creating an impact off the bat," Wiggins said. "Just playing my game and believing in myself because I have to believe in myself before anyone else can."

I think his body will bulk up more quickly, he's already bigger, he has a better handle, and his game fits Cleveland better.

I'm not criticizing Wiggins. But, you have to worry about Cleveland. Look at the "surprise" pick last year. How'd that work out?

They haven't been to the playoffs in a million years and they should have taken a guy more ready to play right now, and a better fit with a scoring PG.

3. Miami Heat acquires UConn’s Shabazz Napier in draft-day deal

The Heat traded up two spots in the first round of the NBA Draft to acquire UConn point guard Shabazz Napier, who won two NCAA titles.

<snip>

"For the first time during the LeBron James Era, the Heat generated a groundswell of excitement with a draft pick.

And the Heat did it by procuring a player, Shabazz Napier, that James on Thursday called “my favorite player in the draft.”

By trading up two spots with Charlotte, the Heat landed the player it targeted: the Connecticut point guard who developed into an outstanding long-range shooter, leader and passer while winning two national titles."

"The Heat made several attempts to trade up to land Napier and ultimately found a partner in Charlotte, which dealt the 24th pick to Miami.

James was a strong supporter of Napier, and his selection could only help the Heat’s already solid chances of retaining James.

“No way you take another point guard in the lottery before Napier,” James tweeted during the NCAA Tournament."
