Report: Jimmy Haslam wants Johnny Manziel to tone it down

It’s not just fans and members of the media who are focusing on the off-field activities of Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam is also taking notice — and he doesn’t like what he sees.

That’s the word from Chris Mortensen of ESPN, who reported on the air today that Haslam wants Manziel to tone it down. Haslam was apparently bothered by the video that surfaced of Manziel holding a large stack of cash up to his ear, pretending it was a phone, and saying, “”I can’t hear you. There’s too much money in my f–king hand.”

“It did not sit well with the owner Jimmy Haslam, who did instruct his staff to at least have a talk with Johnny about being more savvy as he deals with social media,” Mortensen said, via Cleveland.com. “We know you’re young. We know you’re single. Joe Montana himself said that Bill Walsh pulled him aside, and that was before the age of social media. Johnny Manziel has been told to tone it down, and to watch what goes up on social media.”

But while Haslam may have passed that message along, Manziel apparently didn’t get it: Manziel has already declared that he won’t change his ways....

He will definitely be a target if he makes it onto the playing field and if he doesn't then the team management will take care of him.

Manziel, actually.

But this does look kind of fun:

via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “I’m going to enjoy my time off.”

That’s a strong statement, especially since “anybody” includes his head coach and any veteran teammate who may advise him to tone it down. For now, coach Mike Pettine doesn’t seem to have an issue with the “work hard, play harder” approach...

His teammates definitely have a concern about Manziel mania. The quarterback said his teammates are “tired of the hype” and sick of the questions about Manziel’s off-field behavior... (link)

Particularly because he's supposed to be the third stringer. But like Mitt Romney and the Bush brothers, Manziel is not trying to work his way INTO a life of status and privilege.

Football is not his all-or-nothing escape from obscurity or poverty, but something he happens to enjoy doing at the moment. He has ALWAYS been a first-stringer, and sees no advantage in playing by the same rules "we people" have to. Which leads me to conclude that either Manziel is pathologically self-possessed enough to put Romney to shame, or he's drawing first blood in a psychological war with his coach, who is also a rookie and whose silence on this subject has been deafening.

He should probably control his criminal instincts before he criticizes anyone else.
