Oh noooo. Soccer players don't flop.

Except when they do. I am sitting here watching the Netherlands vs. Mexico match and Mexico got robbed on a penalty when some alleged contact was made between the Mexican player and the Dutch guy. The Dutch guy took a dive and the referee pulled out his yellow card. Netherlands subsequently scored a goal on a free kick so the flop may cost Mexico a victory.
Please understand that I do not care one way or the other who wins this match, I'm just trying to be a bit more "global" by watching soccer. But if guys are flopping like that Dutch guy did, I just cannot watch.
Yep, it cost the Mexican team a victory. The NBA players who flop have nothing on these soccer players.

When a flop leads to one goal in a game decided by one goal, the impact on the outcome is huge compared to the cumulative small edge one might get from a few extra free throws, etc. in basketball. Awful way to end an otherwise great game!

and thought the same thing. Number one the player wasn't really attacking the goal. I'm sure the rules are pretty specific but there was no blatant attack on goal. secondly, why doesn't the player who is fouled made to take the shot?

So most referees will give a penalty when the attacking player goes down. It doesn't matter whether the attacking player is looking for it or not.

The biggest blunder was from the defender who made the challenge. The attacker was moving away from goal and there was plenty of Mexican defenders surrounding him, the challenge wasn't necessary.

Everyone flops. Quarterbacks & punters flop. I'm sure there are other tricks to deceive officials that are used in every sport except golf is a little different.
