Giants' Madison Bumgarner named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year
Every honor that Madison Bumgarner received after his historic postseason performance seemed to overwhelm him more than the one before. This one will be tough to top, because it is not merely a baseball award. It transcends the diamond.
Bumgarner on Monday was named Sports Illustrateds Sportsman of the Year, a prestigious distinction that only six other major-league pitchers have held since the magazine first presented the award to runner Roger Bannister in 1954 after he broke the four-minute-mile barrier.
Bumgarner is the first Giant to win and the first pitcher since Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling shared the award in 2001.
Its extremely humbling, Bumgarner said. You hear it a lot that it hasnt sunk in yet. I dont know if this one will ever sink in. This one is truly special. Just to be considered for an award like this is an honor in itself, let alone win it.
