http://www.dmagazine.com/publications/d-magazine/2014/february/dallas-cowboys-tony-dorsett-is-losing-his-mind/That is part of the reason there was such a strong reaction to news reports in early November that Dorsetts brain was damaged. But its not just that he looks relatively youthful and healthy. He looks the same as he did when he was the charismatic leader of one of the most popular teams in NFL history, the version of the Cowboys first branded Americas Team. Thats why Dorsett rose straight to the top of the 24-hour news cycle, somber present-day clips juxtaposed with some of the brutal hits he took during his playing days, including the one that knocked him unconscious in a 1984 game against the Philadelphia Eagles....
Dorsett doesnt know exactly when he began having trouble remembering things. He didnt think hed have to keep track, and what does it matter anyway? It started happening, and then it started happening more, and he still didnt believe it was happening at all until it was unavoidable. I was in denialhe hits the word preacher-hardfor a long time. Because I was just, Nah, this cant be happening to me at this age.?
His longtime friend and former teammate Tony Hill recalls Dorsett mentioning over the years that he was starting to forget, that he needed to write things down. But Hill didnt know how serious it was until Dorsett went public in early 2012, joining more than 4,500 retired players and families of deceased players in a class-action lawsuit (a consolidation of several concurrent suits) against the NFL. (The various plantiffs attorneys and lawyers for the NFL are currently in the process of finalizing a $765 million settlement.)
A couple of years have passed. Gotta wonder how he's doing.

(64,920 posts)It was the second most intelligent thing you have heard me say -- The DH is an abomination and should be abolished RIGHT FUCKING NOW is the most intelligent.
And yes, I remember when his Tony Dorsett's name was pronounced that way. I remember when he was with Pitt (not Will Pitt) and won the Heismann in 76.
I just want to make sure I am not your most "favourite" DUer!!

(78,249 posts)It's more recent stuff that's fuzzy.
And it was always spelled "Dorsett", even when pronounced "DOOR-sit".

(31,061 posts)I can't rationalize the injuries.
Decided a few years ago that the whole premise behind football was simply wrong. Every play ended with an attempt to hurt or injure. No amount of protective equipment could save players from the long-term effects of playing the game.
Having survived one year of high school football I can still appreciate some of the minute aspects of the game like a well thrown pass and exceptional reception or a deke-filled open field run. These, however, I can do in my backyard or at the local playground, with only a flag hanging from my belt for protection.
