The turf at Levis Stadium, which will host Monday nights College Football Playoff championship game between Alabama and Clemson, has been a topic of conversation and consternation pretty much since the stadium opened in 2014. About a month into its tenure as the 49ers home stadium, San Francisco Coach Jim Harbaugh pulled his team off the field during practice because of the slippery sod, and his replacement Jim Tomsula did the same thing a year later. And who can forget this moment from Super Bowl 50 in 2016, when Broncos defensive end DeMarcus Ware pushed Panthers offensive lineman Michael Oher around the field as if he were wearing ice skates:
The problems have persisted into this season. After his Seahawks lost to the 49ers at Levis Stadium on Dec. 16, Seattle Coach Pete Carroll called the field conditions really lousy.
It wasnt great, Carroll told reporters. There were guys slipping all over the place and you could see guys in pass protection, you could see guys on the field goal protection sticking their cleats in the ground and it was moving.
But the College Football Playoff organizers insist that the field for Monday nights game will hold up, even though the Bay Area has seen some rain in recent days. For one, theyre keeping it under a tarp when it rains. For another, its an entirely new field, one installed almost immediately after the Redbox Bowl ended at Levis Stadium on New Years Eve.
