Giants retake 1st place behind Cueto and a resurgent offense
To borrow an auto-racing cliche, this is where the rubber meets the road: 40 games left, a division title at stake.
The cliche does not translate well in Spanish, so Johnny Cueto said it this way after the Giants swamped the Mets 8-1 on Friday night to complete a two-game swing that restored their division lead:
This is where everything comes together. Now were going to see what kind of team we have. All the hitters are coming together, and the pitching. Were going to have to grind it out till the end of the year.
Finally, the Giants seem ready to rejoin the fight.
In their first consecutive wins of August, they torched the Mets for 18 runs on 32 hits. More important, they got the two clutch hits they seemed incapable of providing through a 9-21 start to the second half.
