Hudson's hiccup in loss to White Sox shows Giants' fall to mean

Chicago --

So great was the Giants' 42-21 start that they needed to lose eight of nine games before they no longer had the best record in the majors. They lost the crown Wednesday when the White Sox shelled Tim Hudson and held on for a 7-6 victory.

The Giants are in a free fall that arrived as suddenly as the surge that pushed them to a 9 1/2-game lead in the National League West. The Dodgers have chopped that to four games in 11 days.

"One reason you like to have a good start, it gives you a cushion," manager Bruce Bochy said after the Giants' lost their fifth in a row. "Now, we've got to right the ship here and get back on track."
