Relief is negligible after Cain shines

Matt Cain got his groove back Friday night, and that story lasted all of eight innings.

Then the story changed. In so many ways.

Closers Sergio Romo and Aroldis Chapman blew ninth-inning save opportunities, and the Giants took the Reds to the 11th inning before falling 7-3. They've lost 14 of 18, and their lead in the National League West is down to one game, their tiniest since May 10.

Romo turned Cain's 1-0 lead into a 2-1 deficit, thanks to the slider he hung to Brandon Phillips, who hit a two-run homer and put a dent in the Giants' promotional all-Brandon weekend, which was supposed to feature Crawford and Belt, not Phillips. Romo, who began the ninth by walking Joey Votto, has yielded 15 earned runs in 15 innings.
