St. Louis archbishop claims he wasn’t sure it was illegal for priests to have sex with kids

St. Louis Archbishop Robert Carlson testified last month that he wasn’t sure whether it was illegal for priests to have sex with children while he served as chancellor of the St. Paul and Minneapolis archdiocese.

The former chancellor gave a deposition last month in a lawsuit that claims the Minnesota archdiocese and the Diocese of Winona created a public nuisance by keeping information on abusive priests secret, reported Minnesota Public Radio.

The 69-year-old Carlson also faces a massive clergy abuse lawsuit in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, where he’s served as archbishop since 2009.

One document made public in that case shows more than 100 priests and church employees have been accused of sexual abuse, and the Missouri Supreme Court ordered the archdiocese to turn over their names under seal.

The Minnesota lawsuit was filed by a man who claimed a priest abused him during the 1970s, and Carlson told the plaintiff’s attorneys that his understanding of those accusations had changed over the years.

“I’m not sure whether I knew it was a crime or not,” Carlson said. “I understand today it’s a crime.”

Although it's oddly worded and its syntax is fucked up.

The rest of what you typed yesterday - as well as today - is simply posturing for reasons unknown, beyond that you find it reassuring.

...you uses awkward syntax, and the occasional fancy word or phrase, to give the appearance to their fan club that they are smarter than they actually are, and that they are not, in fact, almost entirely full of shit.

So, you can either explain how you consider someone that believes in mythical beings as being rational, but those that require proof of the existence of said beings as irrational, or you can keep dodging the question, slink off as you did yesterday, or just come out with it and admit that you are just full of shit and can't back up what you have said.

Oh, and while we're at it, you are STILL acting like a condescending knowitall, which according to YOU, is a major character flaw.

Your best move is to just admit you have been outed, and then bugger off...

Next?

I could point out the erroneous assumptions implicit in your question, then point out that telling the person to whom you're posing the question that he is full of shit (which may or may not contradict the other description of pseudo-intellectual poseur) undercuts the certainty of the question. While doing so I could also point out how unoriginal the question is, being typed simultaneously and triumphantly on hundreds of other keyboards, and could then point out how your accusation of me being a condescending knowitall (sic) is comparable to tossing a hand grenade soaked in glue.

But I won't.

I'll simply give your words back to you, "bugger off... "

Our Archdiocese is just fucked up, oh and they released a statement about this:

ON EDIT: Dammit, wrong link, here:

http://archstl.org/commoffice/press-release/2014/archdiocese-st-louis-addresses-arch

I'll keep the second link, its the actual court document.

http://www.archspm.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/158765rcarlson05232014_Full_Redacted.pdf

Basically they are claiming that he is answering a different question entirely, while the video plainly shows otherwise.

Child rape, "a crime or not?" Gee, there was just no way to know back in the dark ages of the 1970s.

And these men think they have the right to lecture everyone else - RCC member or not - on how we get to live our lives.
