A Redskins boycott? United Church of Christ leaders are about to vote on one.

In the late 1960s, Terry Provance stood outside grocery stores, protesting Gallo wines in support of a boycott on table grapes. In the 1980s, he convinced the administrative body of his seminary school to stop investing in companies that did business in South Africa as part of a widespread protest against apartheid.

Now, the retired minister who lives in the District is intent on using economic activism to open a new front on the decades-long battle to force the Washington Redskins to change its name.

On Saturday, the Central Atlantic Conference of the United Church of Christ will vote on a resolution penned by Provance that calls for boycotting the team’s games and gear until the name is changed. If approved, the resolution will then likely be brought to the national governing body of the church, which oversees 5,100 congregations with about a million members.

It is a move that social activists and boycott experts say could be momentum-changing if others join in and raise the pressure on fans, players and advertisers.

That is not too different from Washington Red Skins. I think it has a nice ring to it, "Washington Reds"....would that be satisfactory? I guess the Cincinnati Reds would bulk, but who cares.
