Pat Robertson Says Even Jesus Tattoos Are Only For Heathens

Tattoos are unbiblical and only fit for heathens -- even if the ink portrays Jesus or other religious subjects, according to Pat Robertson.

During a “Bring It On” segment of The 700 Club, the televangelist responded to a viewer who said his friend was considering getting a tattoo of Jesus. "Does that make it okay?" the viewer asked.

“It doesn’t make it okay because it’s religious, believe me,” Robertson responded. “I mean, it could be a tattoo of some hoochie-cooch girl. It doesn’t really make any difference.”

The Bible outlines that people cannot "mark their bodies, and cut themselves like the heathen did,” Robertson continues.

“Tattooing is heathen practice. It is not a Christian practice, to mar the body that [God] gave you. And you see people that have gone crazy on this, and their bodies are just filled with these things. It is a heathen practice, and it is prohibited in the Old Testament. So that fact that it’s Jesus doesn’t make a bit of difference.”

Jesus hates tattoos? Who knew?

I think God wants Pat to set himself some priorities. Let's end war and hunger and, right after that, we can worry about tattoos.

What an arse.

Well, I do, but I don't believe that intelligent people are making the argument.

It also, I believe, highlights the double standard in this group. If an atheist says something about religion is ridiculous, we get scolded. But these kinds of threads are just fine.

religious convictions. We should not begrudge them the same sort of hilarity we engage in all the time. Plus, who knows, they might even accidentally alert on themselves.

as an offering to those gods.

Like most of Leviticus, the strictures were intended to keep the Israelites distinct as a sign of their Covenant.

It's not a matter of reversal; it's a matter of applicability.

Oh wait, it must be because the Israelites were Bronze Age tribes wandering aimlessly waiting for a sadistic God to impose arbitrary rules on them so he could chortingly send them to hell for eternity.

Spend five minutes on any online Bible commentary. That will take less time than what you did produce.

BTW, here's another school of thought.

* (19:28) Do not tattoo yourselves: see note on Gn 4:15. This prohibition probably refers only to the common ancient Near Eastern practice of branding a slave with its owner’s name as well as branding the devotees of a god with its name.

I personally think that's a ridiculous interpretation. There is no limitation specified at all. And cutting and tattooing are in the same breath.

But there's nothing I can think of, that wields such power on my life that I want it permanently displayed on my flesh.

Interestingly my friend's daughter had a few friends with the names of their ex-boyfriends tattooed on them. Still do, I guess.
