United Church of Christ Joins Sponsors of Gay Games

By STUART ELLIOTT

A PROTESTANT denomination known for its longtime support of religious diversity and inclusion has agreed to become a sponsor of the 2014 edition of the Gay Games, to be held in northeast Ohio from Aug. 9 to 16.

The denomination, the United Church of Christ, has its headquarters in Cleveland, which, along with Akron, is one of two cities that will play host to the more than 35 sporting and cultural events scheduled to be part of Gay Games 9. Geography, however, is only one reason the church agreed to become a major sponsor; ideology loomed larger.

“The United Church of Christ has been a leader in L.G.B.T. inclusion,” said the Rev. James Moos, a national officer of the church, using the shorthand for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.

Mr. Moos, whose title is executive minister of wider church ministries, added: “No matter who you are or where you are in life’s journey, you are welcome here.”

(which hasn't always lived by its own motto. Still, it's good motto).

Great news, thanks.

I have a feeling that at least one Church of Christ minister who passed on about ten years ago just turned over in his grave. Sorry, Father Hal. You were a lovely person in so many ways, but not on this issue.
