Vatican says believers are shunning Catholic lifestyle after scandals

What the hell is a "Catholic lifestyle"?

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jun/26/believers-shun-catholic-church-teachings-vatican-scandals

The Vatican has blamed a pernicious mixture of insensitive priests, "conspicuously lavish" clerical lifestyles, the sex abuse scandal and a morally-lax modern culture dominated by the mass media for large numbers of Catholics no longer living their private lives according to church teachings.

In a document seen as the working paper for a hotly-anticipated meeting later this year, the Vatican said responses to a questionnaire it sent out globally last year showed that many ordinary believers were either ignorant of teachings on topics such as marriage and divorce or regarded them as overly intrusive.

I think they've only half got a handle on their problem. Long before their pedophilia scandal was on the front pages, your average Catholic was selecting which teachings s/he wanted to follow. The phrase "cafeteria Catholic" is hardly a recent invention.

"living their private lives according to church teachings."

Cafeteria Catholic is as useful a term as Monolithic Catholic.

after 12 years of Catholic school. My divorced and remarried Aunt was an Adulteress and my Cousin was a Bastard. My Parents were going to Hell for choosing to use artificial birth control because I was an ONLY child by that.

This is far from anything new. No, "Kinder, Gentler" Pope Francis won't change my mind.

People are now able to decide for themselves that many official church teachings are baloney.

Putting a friendly face on the same old bullshit isn't gonna help.

your cousin was never a bastard or to use a less vulgar term, illegitimate. This is a reference to whether some one is the issue of persons unmarried under the law- that is, they are not the "legal" heirs of their father and therefore are illegitimate. This has nothing to do with church law.

The legitimacy of children is not compromised by a declaration of nullity of their parents marriage. One thing doesn't equate the other.

And no your parents aren't necessarily condemned. If you notice the church will declare the odd person a saint but has never declared anyone, even Judas or Hitler, is in Hell. Now Southern Baptists might say so.

As a catholic I am a perfect example of the so called "cafeteria catholic'. I don't believe that the church should be in my bedroom and I don't believe they have the right to tell me and my wife how to practice family planning. Last I checked the church was asking me for donations on the collection plate and I didn't see anything about helping pay for all those children I should have. I also have a legitimate issue with a church that espouses marriage yet its leaders have no reality of it because they cannot marry. I have stayed n the church because I do believe in the teachings of Jesus and I wanted my children to have a understanding of faith. The American Catholic Church is way out of touch with its parishioner's and I think the Vatican is becoming aware of that issue.

I have two daughters. One is straight, married 5 years, and the mother of a newborn recently (used artificial BC all those years!). I have another daughter who is gay and married her spouse last year in NY. Sorry, Catholic church, they are BOTH my children and as a Mom, I recognize BOTH of their marriages, and their right to love who they so choose.

NEITHER of my children married in the Catholic Church, so I suppose NEITHER of them, straight or gay, is really married according to the Catholic Church. They are both "fornicators" and "living in SIN". From THIS Mom, TOUGH. Heard it all before, 50 years ago in your school.

I didn't think about that one either, I am also a sinner in the eyes of the church because I got a vasectomy because my wife and I have three beautiful children and that is all we wanted or could truly afford to have, I did not feel that my wife should have to bear the burden of birth control so we made the decision that I would get snipped. I was unaware of the churches view on vasectomies until o few years later when a devout catholic friend of mine told me that I had committed a mortal sin because I had altered my body. oh well.

Paid for by INSURANCE because we didn't want more than 2 kids. That was agreed upon before we married in 1974. Back then we had to wait 24 hours before the procedure, and listen to a lecture by the doctor as 35 year olds with 2 kids about "what ifs". I even had to sign my CONSENT as his wife. I told that doctor what I felt about that one.

So you see, guys, it is not just WOMEN who can be forced to comply with issues concerning their own bodies.

Who are hoping for changey stuff from the big powwow:

“The doctrine of the church is not up for discussion, as we have seen emphasized many times in recent years by various teachings,” said Monsignor Bruno Forte, special secretary to this year’s synod.

It isn't considered doctrine, so even reactionary Catholics say that it could be changed. And it's the most obvious way to deal with their severe lack of priests.

I have no problem with people being Catholic, but they should endeavor to move away from the lifestyle that is so harmful to themselves and the people around them. It's the Catholic lifestyle that has a negative impact on modern society.
Love the sinner, not the sin.
