Due to changes in my work-schedule,

I do not expect to be on DU much for the rest of 2014, so I will be retiring as host here

I hope the Religion group will continue to be a place where everyone can all explore in a civil and productive manner the complex issues related to religion in an open tolerant secular society

As I head off for now, I'd like to repost something I put in the Religion group several years ago: an excerpt from a fourteenth century Buddhist masterpiece, Togme Zongpo's 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva

... Attraction to those close to you catches you in its currents;
Aversion to those who oppose you burns inside;
Indifference that ignores what needs to be done is a black hole.
Leave your homeland -- this is the practice of a bodhisattva ...

Even if your peers or subordinates,
Put you down to make themselves look better,
Treat them respectfully as you would your teacher:
Put them above you -- this is the practice of a bodhisattva ...

If you don't subdue the opponent inside, your own anger,
Although you subdue opponents outside, they just keep coming.
Muster the forces of loving kindness and compassion
And subdue your own mind -- this is the practice of a bodhisattva ...

Abusive language upsets others
And undermines the ethics of a bodhisattva.
So, don't upset people or
Speak abusively -- this is the practice of a bodhisattva ...

And an ecumenical voice. One cannot get any better that that here. I want you to know that you should retire with distinction... Host emeritus.

My best regards.

Lordy (so to speak), we're going to have a tough job filling your shoes.

It's a commitment of self to community, to host, mod or MIRT. For all the complaints about the quality of the discourse here, we would not be able to survive as a greater community without all our volunteers.

And smaller groups within the community, like group/forum participants, would not be able to sustain our shared interests with so many different viewpoints and passionately diverging beliefs.

This group often makes me raise eyebrows, snort, or even grind teeth with frustration. But sometimes it also makes me smile, or even cry a little with joy as light breaks, people connect, and ideas are shared.

Thank you for your commitment to helping that happen-- all of it.

Check in with us as your new schedule allows.

appreciatively,
Bright

Honestly, when I do it is usually by accident - from the Latest Threads page. I just wanted to tell you I love the excerpt you've posted. And, I hope the changes in your work schedule are to your liking/advantage!

and it seems as if you have found what most of us are seeking--not Religion but a way of life. May you stay forever young.
