And the number one religion news story of 2014 is:

1. The self-styled Islamic State expands a reign of terror into Iraq and Syria, driving out the Iraqi army from Mosul and exiling ancient Christian communities, Yazidis and other religious minorities on threat of death. The United Nations, Christians and many Muslim groups strongly condemn the videotaped beheadings of American journalist James Foley and other hostages as inhumane and un-Islamic.

number 2 and 3 are pretty shitty too, although tied for 3 is !The Amazing Pope!

The list is not a great argument for why we need religion.

Mormon leaders acknowledged for the first time that church founder and prophet, Joseph Smith, took as many as 40 wives

So much for "traditional family values".

Yeah, I think a major religion that considers itself a "Christian" religion might want to sort out some of their past and realize that a "tradition" of one man one woman that wasn't at all the same 150 years ago within their faith might not be that much of a "tradition".

And another news item from last year was all about ex-communicating a woman who argued in favor of changing the "tradition" of male dominance in that faith, by allowing women more equal powers and rights.

So male dominance is really the "tradition" that Mormonism wants to keep; no matter whether it's deciding the number of wives or deciding who gets to rule in that church.

RNA is just a secret front for the secret atheist and anti-theist army that is waging war on Christmas and religion. By printing all this news about religion, they convert more and more people into atheism.

It's the best atheist strategy ever, call themselves "religious", publish terrible news about what religious people are doing to others, and then, wham, bam alakazam, more atheists come out of the closet.

hate, fear, discrimination and ignorance that is driven by avaricious, powerful patriarchies. Over the millennia, this scam, in all its various iterations, has crippled the progress of human society and impeded the advance of civilization.

While a case might be made for notable exceptions, they are too few and too transient to have altered the seductive lure greed, power and authoritarian control that predominants the world's religious factions.

of the appalling hurt, divisions, cruelties, ignorance and selfish stupidity of all forms of religion. Forget global warming, nuclear war and the rest, this religion nonsense is what is going to finish us all off.

And no bullshit from Blank Frank, Pope Awesome is going to make the slightest bit of difference to anything: bigotry wrapped in prayer is still bigotry.

We should respect the rights of individuals to voice their intolerance, as distasteful as it may be. That does not mean we should respect the intolerance itself.

The nonsense people believe is only more dangerous than the nonsense people think they know. Certainty is only a mask of ignorance. To learn is to know first ones ignorance, and that knowledge denies any sense of certainty.

Is the fuss they make if you try to take it away.

Religio is a tie back to the past. Religion explains reality in the eyes of believers as well as science does for rational people. It also offers people a community and as sense of worth and purpose. It would all be perfectly acceptable if the religious did not demand special privileges which makes them more than politically equal, and if they did not try to involve themselves in issue beyond their department on the basis of their manipulated flocks.
