Analysis: In 'religious freedom,' GOP finds sticky issue

Same-sex marriage is the issue that won't go away, no matter how much the state's Republican leaders may try to avoid it.

Social conservatives, including some state lawmakers, delivered a reminder of that this week when they said they would pursue "religious freedom" legislation that would allow businesses to not serve gay couples.

Sen. Scott Schneider, R-Indianapolis, said Friday he would introduce legislation designed to fill gaps in the state's "religious liberty framework." And social conservative organizations, including the American Family Association of Indiana and the Indiana Family Institute, have been actively promoting the legislation since this fall. On the other side, opponents of the measure say it would enshrine discrimination against gay couples, newly allowed to legally marry in Indiana following a series of court rulings (and U.S. Supreme Court inaction).

Both sides are lined up ready to do battle in the upcoming legislative session.

If the first religious right in your sentence doesn't trump the second then by default, it is trumped.
