'Sense of regret' in Vatican over pope meeting with gay marriage opponent
VATICAN CITY | BY PHILIP PULLELLA
Pope Francis' meeting last week with an American woman at the center of a row over gay marriage was not something he had sought and should not be seen as an endorsement of her views, the Vatican said on Friday.
One Vatican official said there was "a sense of regret" that the pope had ever seen Kim Davis, a Kentucky county clerk who went to jail in September for refusing to honor a U.S. Supreme Court ruling and issue same-sex marriage licenses.
The encounter in Washington was originally kept secret and has sparked widespread debate since it became public this week, proving something of a misstep for the pontiff.
Looking to smother the fierce controversy, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said Davis was one of "several dozen" people who had been invited by the Vatican ambassador to see Francis during his visit to the U.S. capital.

"The only real audience granted by the Pope at the Nunciature (Vatican embassy) was with one of his former students and his family," the statement said.

(17,469 posts)If your REALLY regret the meeting, denounce her viewpoint.

(13,029 posts)Because her position on same-sex marriage is perfectly aligned with that of the RCC and its leader. If the pope had somehow been "tricked" into a meeting with an advocate of same-sex marriage, you can be certain that he and the Vatican would be announcing from the mountaintop that her viewpoint was NOT the church's. But they're playing a two-faced game and trying to appeal to gullible liberals as well as conservatives and hoping no one will notice.

When you realize you have wronged others repeatedly and you feel regret first you are supposed to cease the hurtful behavior, confess to the wrong and then correct the damage you have done as much as possible. I look forward to being witness to that process out of Francis.

What I said, was that if they regretted the meeting with Davis they could prove it by hiring him back. It would be a magnanimous gesture which could help heal this particular wound.
Edit: The article says he was fired because of the time of his coming out. Not for being gay or for breaking his vow of celibacy...though I don't think anyone can be faulted for thinking that those were major considerations for his being removed from his job

(82,333 posts)Do you really know active Roman Catholic priests who are in an open relationship?
The only provision for that is the Ordinariate established for Married Episcopal priests who join the RCC.

Further, the article specifically says he was fired solely for the time of his coming out...though Like I said in my edit I wouldn't blame anyone if they thought his orientation or his relationship were major (or even deciding) factors as well.
Besides it not like we haven't had priests who had illicit relationships and kept their jobs, or even a few popes...

I might not believe anymore, but it is still the church of my family and my heritage.

(48,181 posts)The RCC actively opposed lgbtq equality. The RCC fights in our courts for religious exemptions for their non-religious institutions. The pope clearly stated his support for government officials to refuse to obey the laws. The pope has clearly stated his opposition to marriage equality.
