St. Francis in films.

At this writing Turner Classic Movies is about to air a film at 9:30PM (03-22-13) based on the life of Francis of Assisi and directed by Roberto Rossellini. It is 'Flowers of St. Francis' (1950) and is generally regarded as the best version of his life.

Hollywood gave the story the big studio treatment with 'Francis of Assisi' (1961) notable mainly because Dolores Hart is cast as St. Clare. Hart had starred in 'Where The Boys Are' and had been the love interest for Elvis Presley in 'King Creole'. A few years after this film she left Hollywood forever to become a Catholic nun.

Another film, 'Francesco' (1989) starring Mickey Rourke as St. Francis and Helena Bonham Carter as St. Clare is best described as "strange" and is viewed only as an oddity.
