Former Roman Catholic priest defends new church

Daniel González, The Republic | azcentral.com 10:36 p.m. MST June 10, 2014

After the Phoenix Catholic Diocese relieved him of his duties as a priest in 2002, the Rev. Julio Alberto Higuera went on to create a new church in Mesa.

Now, Higuera and his church, Iglesia Santa Maria Madre Nuestra in Mesa, are at the center of a dispute with the diocese.

The diocese says Higuera and his church are not recognized by the Roman Catholic Church and in April warned Catholics to stay away.

Now, Higuera is fighting back.
