Pope Francis played key role in U.S.-Cuba deal
Pope Francis played a key role in finalizing a deal to open relations between the United States and Cuba for the first time in 53 years, according to a U.S. official.
While discussions took place in Canada over the last year and a half, a key meeting also happened at the Vatican in the fall. Aside from President Obama and Cuban President Raúl Castro, the pontiff was the only other foreign leader directly involved in the talks, said a senior administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the talks publicly.
Francis' support was particularly important given Cuba's historical and cultural Catholic identity, the official said, and his election as the first-ever pope from Latin America gave him particular credibility.

If he ever gets around to addressing the church's misogyny, he might well have me in his corner. Still, I'm impressed with what he has started to do thus far.

The news media is making a lot of hay about Rubio's comment for example;
Sen. Marco Rubio, a Catholic, criticized Pope Francis on Wednesday after the pontiff played a key role in helping the United States and Cuba forge an agreement that resulted in the release of American Alan Gross from Cuba.
Rubio said he would ask His Holiness to take up the cause of freedom and democracy.
The Florida Republican said he didnt criticize Francis personal appeals to help facilitate Gross release, but was speaking in response to the White Houses announcement about talks to normalize relations with Cuba after a nearly 50-year embargo with the country.
The pope played a pivotal role through personal appeals to President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro to help the two countries forge an agreement for the release of Gross, Obama announced on Wednesday.

It disgusts me because these guys were all in love with the Pope when it was their guy in charge.
