World Premiere: Introducing the Discovery Channel Telescope
By Hillary Ossip
Fri Sep 7, 2012 04:08 PM ET
Tune in on Sunday, September 9th at 7pm ET/PT for the world premiere of Scanning the Skies: The Discovery Channel Telescope!
On Sunday evening, Discovery Channel will introduce Americas latest scientific wonder with the world premiere of Scanning the Skies: The Discovery Channel Telescope. This one-hour special documents the concept, creation and final reveal of the cutting-edge Discovery Channel Telescope.
Based at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, the Discovery Channel Telescope is 4.3-meters tall and weighs over six tons, making it the fifth-largest telescope in the continental U.S. The telescope is a joint $53 million project between Lowell Observatory and Discovery Communications that took nine years to construct.
What else makes the DCT so special? Its designed to spot fainter objects, including near-Earth objects such as asteroids and comets in the inner solar system that could pose a threat to Earth. Furthermore, this high-tech telescope will be used to probe beyond the orbit of Neptune, working to uncover the mysteries of space beyond our solar system.
Want the inside scoop on the Discovery Channel Telescope? Then be sure to tune in for this special documenting the construction of the cutting-edge Discovery Channel Telescope, from conception to first light.

Cool that the Discovery Channel sponsors a telescope; awful that they assign such a bad writer

What's the fucking aperture? That's the only important measurement. How much light does it gather?
Nobody cares about how tall it is. In fact the wider it is and the shorter, the better (for deep sky imaging).
The writer cannot know anything about visual astronomy. And the Discovery editors should not have let this pass.
Height is a useless metric.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discovery_Channel_Telescope
The Discovery Channel Telescope (DCT) is a 4.3 m (170 in) aperture telescope built by Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona and The Discovery Channel.[2][1] DCT was built at a dark sky site in the Coconino National Forest near Happy Jack, Arizona.[3] Happy Jack is located at an elevation of 7,740 ft (2,360 m) and is approximately 65 km (40 mi) south-south-east of Flagstaff. The project is a partnership between Discovery Communications and Lowell Observatory. In its initial implementation, the telescope will cost approximately US$53 million. The telescope will significantly augment Lowell Observatorys observational capability and enable pioneering studies in a number of important research areas.
Final construction of the telescope was completed by February of 2012, and first light images were achieved in April 2012

to their own article about it that she interprets a "4.3 meter telescope" as meaning 4.3 meters tall.
